NR-709C Week 2 One Set of Numbers: How to Write It

The short answer

Before a project is told five ways, its numbers have to be settled once. In our teaching order, this stage of the 256-hour block builds the figures register: every number the project will ever quote, written with its numerator, denominator, window, source and the exact sentence it appears in, so that the poster, the executive summary, the manuscript and the talk all draw from the same file. It is unglamorous work and it prevents the failure that most damages a good project. Your section may print this as NR 709C or NR709C; it is the same course. What NR-709C Week 2 asks for

A hospital rapid response team project reports that escalation calls placed within thirty minutes of an early warning trigger rose from 46 percent to 71 percent. The poster says 46 to 71. The executive brief says a 54 percent relative improvement. The manuscript reports 63 of 137 and 104 of 146. The slide deck rounds to seventy. None of these is wrong, and together they are a problem, because a reviewer who sees three renderings of one result begins checking everything else. Consistency is not a clerical virtue at doctoral level; it is the visible form of analytic discipline.

The register is a working document rather than a submitted one, though some sections ask for a data summary or an evidence table as a deliverable and this feeds it directly. Its structure is simple. One row per number. Each row carries the measure name, the exact value, the numerator and denominator, the time window, the data source and extraction date, the rounding rule, and a canonical sentence written the way you want the number to appear in prose. Every product then quotes the canonical sentence or a legitimate compression of it, never a recalculation.

The boundary, stated because it governs every stage of this block. Practicum hours, hour logs, encounter counts, site paperwork, preceptor and mentor evaluations and every signature on them are your own record of your own work, never drafted, reconstructed, estimated or edited toward acceptance with any help. The supportable layer is written: how figures are documented, how a canonical sentence is phrased, how a table is built so a reader can audit it. Site data appearing in your writing is de-identified as it is written, and aggregates are preferred to case detail everywhere.

Do this work in week two and the rest of the block is materially easier. Every later product becomes an exercise in selection and register rather than in arithmetic, and the final continuity check in week eight takes an hour instead of two days. In a 256-hour term with several deliverables, that is not a small saving.

The NR-709C Week 2 method, step by step

Six moves for settling your numbers once.

  1. Inventory every number the project uses

    Outcome, process, balancing, population counts, participation figures, cost estimates and anything quoted from the literature. Numbers you forget to register are the ones that appear in three versions.

  2. Write each with its numerator, denominator and window

    The proportion alone is never enough. Record what was counted, out of what, over which dates, so any version can be expanded back to full detail when a reader asks.

  3. Record the source and the extraction date

    Which report, which query, which manual audit, pulled on which day and by whom. Numbers change when a report is rerun later, and without an extraction date you cannot explain the difference.

  4. Fix a rounding rule and apply it everywhere

    Whole numbers for percentages, one decimal for rates, medians reported with their interquartile range. Write the rule down; inconsistent rounding across products is the second most common continuity failure.

  5. Draft a canonical sentence for each figure

    The sentence you want in the manuscript, written once, correct and complete. Short formats then compress it deliberately rather than paraphrasing it from memory at midnight.

  6. Decide the one headline number

    Every product needs the same primary figure, and choosing it now stops the poster leading on one measure while the executive brief leads on another. Pick the one your aim statement was written against.

Evidence craft for a figures register

Absolute and relative belong in the same row. A rise from 46 to 71 percent is a 25 point absolute change and a 54 percent relative one. Both are true, they persuade very differently, and recording both stops you reaching for the flattering one under pressure in a short format.

Record what is missing beside what is present. If nine of 146 records lacked a documented time, the register should say so in the same row. Missing data that lives only in your memory does not survive into the products that need to disclose it.

Register literature figures too. Numbers quoted from published studies need their citation, the study's own denominator and its design in the register, because a comparison figure repeated without those details is the easiest way to misrepresent somebody else's work in a poster.

Do not let a graphic become a second source. Charts should be generated from the registered values, and their axis labels, units and time windows should match the register exactly. A figure whose axis says months while the text says quarters is a contradiction a reviewer will find.

Keep the register de-identified and aggregate. The register is a project file, not a clinical one. Counts, denominators and dates at the level of month or quarter are sufficient, and any linkage to individual records stays inside your organization's own systems under its own rules.

Five mistakes that cost points in this week's territory

  • Recalculating for each product. Every recalculation is an opportunity for a different answer, and eventually one of them takes it.
  • Percent-only entries. A register row without a denominator recreates the problem it exists to solve.
  • No extraction date. When a report is rerun and returns a different figure, you will have no way to explain which is right.
  • Two headline numbers. A project that leads on different measures in different rooms sounds like two projects.
  • Leaving literature figures unregistered. Misquoting a comparison study on a poster is a citation error in front of the largest audience you will have.

Questions students ask about this stage

Is a figures register something I submit?
Usually not as a standalone document, though many sections ask for a data or results table that the register feeds directly, and some final documents carry it as an appendix. Its real value is operational. It is the file you open every time you write a number, which means the number is right every time and identical every time. If your section does ask for a submitted version, present it as a clean table with the canonical sentences removed, since those are working notes rather than scholarly prose. Keep your own full version regardless, because week eight will require you to verify every figure across every product and the register is what makes that a one-hour task rather than a two-day one.
My analyst gave me numbers that differ slightly from my own audit. Which do I use?
Register both, then decide with a stated rule and say what you did. Differences between a system report and a manual audit are common and usually explainable: different inclusion logic, different timestamp fields, records amended after the report was generated, or an audit that excluded cases the report counted. Ask the analyst what the report's inclusion logic is, compare it against your own definition, and choose whichever matches your aim statement. Then write one sentence in your methods or a footnote naming the alternative source, its figure and the reason for the difference. A reader who later encounters the other number will find it already accounted for, which is a far better outcome than being asked about a discrepancy you had not noticed.
How precise should figures be in a short format?
As precise as the register, minus detail that does not fit, never rounded into a different claim. On a poster, 71 percent of 146 eligible activations is short and complete. In a huddle sheet, roughly seven in ten is acceptable if the full figure appears somewhere on the same page. What is not acceptable is dropping the denominator entirely, or rounding across a threshold so that 68 becomes about seventy in one product and 68 in another. Set the rule in the register and follow it. Short formats are where evidentiary discipline is most often abandoned, and they are also the formats most people actually read, which is exactly why reviewers check them.
