The short answer

Late in a scientific underpinnings arc the writing turns applied: take the framework you selected and evaluated, and show it doing visible work on a real practice problem, concept by concept. The graded move is correspondence. Each theoretical concept has to be attached to something in the setting that could be observed, and each proposition has to predict something a project could later check. A theory named in the introduction and absent from the analysis is the single most common failure at this stage. Your section may print this as NR 700 or NR700; it is the same course. What NR-700 Week 6 asks for

A telehealth diabetes service has 340 enrolled patients, two nurses running virtual visits, and a problem it can describe in numbers: among patients enrolled for at least ninety days, fewer than half complete the quarterly review visit that the protocol expects. The student has a middle-range self-management framework in hand. The task now is not to explain the framework again. It is to say which of its concepts corresponds to what the service can actually see, which correspondences are strong, which are approximations, and what the framework predicts should happen if the service changes one thing.

Mapping is a precise discipline and it produces the most useful artifact in the whole course: a table with the theory's concepts in one column, the practice element each concept refers to in your setting in the next, the indicator or data source that would reveal it in the third, and a candid note about the quality of the correspondence in the fourth. Building that table forces every hidden weakness into the open. A concept with no data source is a measurement problem you now know about. A practice element with no theoretical concept behind it is a part of your problem the framework does not explain.

The second half of the task is directional. Theories claim influence, and a mapping that only pairs nouns is incomplete. If the framework proposes that perceived self-efficacy influences sustained behavior, then your analysis should say what that means here: that a patient's confidence in operating the glucometer and interpreting a reading should predict whether they attend the review, and that the service could test it. Directional claims are what turn a mapping into an argument a doctoral reader can score.

Expect a written application paper, frequently with a mapping table required or strongly implied, and possibly a board post presenting your mapping for critique. Post the table's hardest row rather than its easiest: doctoral discussion rows reward the reasoning that was difficult, and posts do not reopen once submitted in Canvas.

The NR-700 Week 6 method, step by step

Six analytic moves for making a framework visibly operate on a real problem.

  1. Restate the problem in measurable terms before the theory appears

    Population, setting, the behavior or outcome at issue, the current level with its base and window, and the gap against a standard. A theory cannot be mapped onto a problem described in adjectives.

  2. List the framework's concepts and their source definitions side by side

    Use the definitions from the originating text rather than your paraphrase, because the mapping depends on what the concept actually claims to be. Where you have modified a definition, say so in that row.

  3. Attach a data source to every concept, or mark the gap

    For each concept name what in your setting would reveal it: a field in the record, a validated instrument, an observation, a call disposition code. Concepts with no source are not failures of your analysis; they are findings, provided you label them.

  4. Grade the quality of each correspondence honestly

    Mark each row as direct, proxy or absent. A visit completion field is a direct measure of attendance and a poor proxy for engagement, and saying so in the table is worth more than a paragraph asserting alignment.

  5. Convert propositions into testable statements about your setting

    Rewrite each of the framework's relational claims as a sentence about your population, with a direction: if this rises, that should rise or fall. These sentences are what a later evaluation plan will be built on.

  6. Name the residual the framework does not explain

    Close by stating the part of your problem that the mapping leaves uncovered and what you would do about it: a second framework, a contextual factor, or an explicit limitation carried forward. A complete mapping is suspicious; an honest one is scoreable.

Evidence craft for applied theory writing

Use the source definitions verbatim in the mapping table. Paraphrase in the narrative is fine, but the table is where correspondence is judged, and a concept softened into your own words can be made to fit anything.

Cite published applications in similar settings. Where someone has already mapped this framework onto a comparable problem, say what they found and where your mapping departs. It converts your analysis from an assertion into a contribution.

Keep practice data de-identified and aggregated. Program-level counts are appropriate; individual patient particulars are not needed to make a mapping argument. Where an illustrative case helps, describe the situation rather than the person and strip identifying detail entirely.

Report every practice number with its base and period. One hundred and sixty-two of 340 enrollees completing a review over one quarter is a fact a reader can use. Under half is a sentence that hides how many people it describes.

Do not promise outcomes. A mapping supports predictions, not guarantees, and doctoral graders read confident forecasting as a misunderstanding of what a framework does. Write what the theory would lead you to expect, and say what would count as evidence against it.

Five mistakes that cost points in this week's territory

  • The decorative framework. Named in the introduction, absent from the analysis, resurrected in the conclusion. This is the failure the stage is designed to detect.
  • Mapping to a vague problem. If the practice problem has no numbers, no population and no standard, the correspondences cannot be judged by anyone.
  • Proxies presented as direct measures. Treating attendance as engagement, or transmissions as self-management, inflates the mapping and undermines every prediction built on it.
  • Propositions left as nouns. A mapping without direction cannot generate anything testable and reads as a vocabulary exercise.
  • Claiming total coverage. A framework that explains every aspect of a messy practice problem has been stretched, and a doctoral grader will find the stretch.

  • The problem is stated with counts, denominators and a period before any theory appears
  • Every framework concept has a row in the mapping
  • Each row names a data source or marks the absence of one
  • Correspondence quality is graded rather than assumed
  • Each proposition appears as a directional statement about your population

  • All practice data is aggregated and de-identified

Questions students ask about this stage

My organization will not release data. Can I still write the mapping?
Yes, and it is a common situation. A mapping needs the structure of the data rather than the values: you can say that the record contains a visit completion field, a documented education encounter and a device transmission log, and describe what each would show, without reporting numbers you are not permitted to share. Where you need a magnitude to make the problem legible, use published rates for comparable populations, attributed, and say plainly that local figures are not reported here. That approach is often stronger for a course paper anyway, because it keeps the analysis focused on correspondence rather than on a dataset the grader cannot see, and it avoids any question about what you were authorized to disclose.
How detailed should the mapping table be?
Detailed enough that a colleague could take the table and start designing measurement from it, and no longer. In practice that means one row per concept, four columns, and short entries that a reader can scan. Long prose inside table cells defeats the purpose, because the value of the artifact is that misalignment becomes visible at a glance. Put the reasoning in the narrative and keep the table as the summary a committee would look at. If your framework has more than eight or nine concepts, consider whether you are mapping the entire theory when your problem only engages part of it, and say explicitly which portion of the framework is in scope.
What if the mapping shows my framework is a poor fit?
Write that result. A mapping that fails is a genuine finding and it usually scores well when it is reported honestly, because the analysis row is measuring whether you can see correspondence rather than whether your earlier choice was lucky. Say which concepts failed to attach, what that means for your problem, and what you would do next: supplement with a second framework, shift to a different tier, or restate the problem at the level the theory actually addresses. Discovering a misfit in a course paper costs you very little; discovering it after a practice change has been designed around the framework costs a project, and demonstrating that you can tell the difference is precisely what doctoral preparation is for.
