The second stage of a scientific underpinnings course usually turns on altitude: how abstract a theory is, what that abstraction buys, and what it costs when you try to use it on a real practice problem. Grand theories organize a worldview and cannot be tested directly. Middle-range theories name a handful of concepts and their relationships and can be measured. Practice-level theories describe what should happen in one situation with one population. The written task is to choose deliberately and defend the choice. Your section may print this as NR 700 or NR700; it is the same course. Chamberlain publishes no syllabi outside Canvas. What NR-700 Week 2 asks for
A telehealth manager describes a problem in one sentence: patients discharged from the cardiology service are enrolled in remote monitoring, and roughly a third of them stop transmitting readings within three weeks. She then picks a grand theory of human becoming to explain it, and the paper collapses, because a framework built to describe the whole of the human health experience has nothing specific to say about why a blood pressure cuff stops being used on day nineteen. The failure is not ignorance. It is altitude. She chose a theory two levels above her problem.
This is the stage where doctoral writing starts to be judged on selection rather than on knowledge. You are expected to know the tiers. Grand theories are broad conceptual systems that supply vocabulary and worldview but cannot be operationalized without translation. Middle-range theories sit at the level where nursing actually does most of its explanatory work: a limited set of concepts, stated relationships between them, and enough specificity that instruments exist to measure the concepts. Practice-level or situation-specific theories are narrower still, developed for one population, one condition or one intervention, and they are frequently derived from a middle-range parent.
The move a doctoral grader is watching for is fit. Fit has three components you can write about explicitly. Conceptual fit asks whether the theory's concepts map onto the elements of your problem without forcing. Population fit asks whether the theory was developed with, or has been tested in, people resembling yours. Level fit asks whether the theory operates at the scale of your intervention: an individual behavior theory will not by itself explain a systems failure, and an organizational theory will not by itself explain one patient's decision to stop transmitting.
Expect a written comparison of at least two frameworks with a defended choice at the end, and possibly a posted response arguing for your selection against a classmate's. If your section runs a board this week, argue rather than agree: a doctoral thread that says excellent point and nothing else is a scored deliverable spent for nothing, and posts do not reopen once submitted in Canvas.

Decompose your practice problem into concepts before you look at any theory
Write the problem as a list of nouns: adherence, symptom burden, self-efficacy, caregiver availability, alert fatigue, workflow interruption. That list is your specification. Shopping for a theory before you have it is how students end up defending a framework they picked because it was familiar.

Classify each candidate theory by tier and say how you classified it
Name the tier and give the reason: number of concepts, breadth of phenomena covered, and whether measurable indicators exist. Doctoral readers accept disagreement about tier far more readily than they accept a tier asserted without criteria.

Map concepts one to one and show the map
Put your problem's concepts in one column and the theory's concepts in another, then draw the correspondences and mark the ones that fail. The unmatched rows are the most valuable part of the analysis, because they show where the framework will have to be supplemented.

Interrogate the propositions, not just the concept list
A theory is more than its vocabulary; it claims that certain concepts influence others in a stated direction. Quote or paraphrase the actual propositional statements and check whether your problem behaves the way they predict. A theory whose concepts fit but whose propositions run backwards in your setting is the wrong theory.

Weigh the runner-up honestly instead of building a straw candidate
Choose a second framework that could plausibly win, present its strongest case, and then say precisely which criterion decided against it. Comparison against a deliberately weak alternative is the fastest way to lose an evaluation row at doctoral level.

State what the chosen theory obliges you to do next
Close by naming what the framework now commits you to: which concepts you would have to measure, which population it restricts your claims to, and which part of your problem it explicitly does not explain. A defended choice with no consequences attached is still just a preference.

Evidence craft for theory comparison
Cite the theorist, then cite someone using the theory. A framework described only from its originating text reads as library work. A framework described from its origin and then shown operating in a published application demonstrates that you know it survives contact with data, which is the standard a practice doctorate is held to.
Name the instruments. Middle-range theories earn their place partly because their concepts have been measured. Saying that a construct has validated measurement approaches behind it, and attributing that statement, is far stronger than asserting that a theory is testable.
Report where a theory was developed and in whom. A model built and tested among community-dwelling older adults with a single chronic condition may transfer badly to a post-surgical med-surg population with three. State the development context in the sentence where you claim fit, and treat any gap as a limitation you will carry forward rather than a detail to omit.
Use direction words carefully. Theories propose influence, mediation and moderation, and these are not synonyms. If you write that self-efficacy mediates the relationship between symptom burden and adherence, you have made a specific structural claim that a doctoral reader may check against the source.
Keep the setting example running underneath. Every abstract paragraph should be followed within two paragraphs by a sentence returning to your actual problem. Theory papers lose the application row by drifting upward and never coming back down.
Five mistakes that cost points in this week's territory
- Choosing by familiarity. The framework you met in a master's course is not automatically the framework your problem needs, and a paper that never says why this one wins has skipped the graded task.
- Altitude mismatch. A grand theory pointed at an operational problem produces beautiful sentences that explain nothing measurable.
- Concept lists with no propositions. Reciting a theory's vocabulary without its relational claims is describing a toolbox without saying what it builds.
- The straw runner-up. Comparing your choice against a framework nobody would have picked demonstrates nothing about your judgment.
- Silence about misfit. Every framework leaves part of a real problem unexplained. Naming that part is analysis; hiding it is the thing graders notice most reliably.
Before you submit
- The problem appears as a concept list before any theory is named
- Each tier is distinguished by stated criteria rather than by assertion
- Both candidates are presented at their strongest
- Propositions, not only concepts, are examined
- The mapping names at least one element the theory does not cover
- The decision cites the specific criterion that settled it
- Every reference appears in the text and every in-text citation appears in the list
