What NR-527 Week 6 asks for

A systems week asks for a shift of eye. Interpersonal analysis watches people talk; systems analysis watches the architecture that decides who must be told what, by when, through which pathway, whether anyone is speaking or not.   3. Write the structure as designed, then as run

    First the official version: what policy or convention says happens. Then the lived version: what actually happens on a normal day and on a bad one. Keep them in separate paragraphs so the gap is visible rather than implied.

  4. Trace one information item through the structure

    Follow a single result, concern or decision through the pathway and mark where it waits, transforms or needs a person to remember. Waiting points and memory dependencies are the design flaws this territory grades.

  5. Name the design principle the structure violates

Evidence craft for organizational communication writing

Incident and reporting-system studies count reports, not events. Voluntary reporting captures a fraction of what happens, and the fraction varies by culture and consequence. Cite reported events as reported events, and treat any claim about true rates as an inference the source has to defend.

Your observations are data if you bound them. What you watched on your own unit is legitimate evidence for this paper when you state the vantage point and the window: over the last month, on night shifts, in one role's view. Unbounded impressions read as opinion; bounded ones read as fieldwork.

Five mistakes that cost points in this week's territory

  • Analyzing an incident instead of a structure. One bad night is material for the trace, not the object of the paper. The object is the design that made the night likely.
  • Keeping faces in the analysis. If your finding depends on a specific person's carelessness, it is not yet a systems finding. Rerun the analysis with the roles interchangeable.
  • Describing only the official version. Policy documents are the easy half. The gap between designed and run is where the marks sit, and it takes observation to write.
  • Fixing the people. Reminders, vigilance and reeducation are the recommendations this territory exists to retire. If the redesign does not change the structure, it is not a redesign.
  • Proposing a fix with no cost. Every forcing function adds friction somewhere. Naming the burden your redesign creates, and why it is worth it, is what separates analysis from advocacy.

What if the structure I analyze works fine almost all the time?
Almost all the time is exactly the profile worth analyzing, because structures that fail rarely fail expensively, and their failures are hidden by the long stretches of normal operation. Analyze the structure under load: the night with three admissions, the result arriving at shift change, the covering provider who does not know the unit's habits. Design flaws show at the edges, and a paper that demonstrates how a normally reliable pathway degrades under specific, predictable conditions is a stronger piece of systems reading than a paper about a structure that fails daily, since the daily failure needs no analysis to see.
