What NR-503 Week 1 asks for
Bedside reasoning starts with one person and generalizes outward. Population reasoning starts with a defined group and stays there. The opening stage is where that switch is made, and every scoring row later in the session assumes it happened. A group is defined when someone else could take your description and enumerate the same people: who is included, in what age range, in what place, and over what stretch of time. Adults in the United States is a category. Adults aged 45 to 64 enrolled at three clinics in one county during a twelve month period is a population.
The triangle and the web are the other half. The agent, host and environment model came out of communicable disease and still explains a great deal, but the web of causation was built because chronic disease rarely has a single agent, and the stage usually asks you to say which model suits your chosen problem and why. Naming the limits of the triangle for a condition with many contributing causes is a stronger answer than applying it everywhere.
Deliverables at this point in an eight-week session tend to be light: a written response of two to three pages, a posted response in the classroom, or both. If your section runs a discussion this week, compose it in a separate document first. Posts do not reopen once submitted in Canvas, and a definition that quietly changes its population halfway through will be visible for the whole session.

Reduce your week's rubric to its verbs
Copy the rows out of Canvas and mark each one as identify, describe, apply or evaluate. In epidemiology these carry very different costs: identifying takes a sentence, applying a model takes three paragraphs, and evaluating requires sources. The heaviest row tells you where the drafting time belongs.

Write the population as four facts
Who, where, what age band, over what period. Write them as a list before you write any prose, then turn the list into one sentence. Every figure you report later has to belong to that sentence, and populations that drift are the reason otherwise good opening papers lose points.

Choose the causal model deliberately
Agent, host and environment for a condition with an identifiable agent. A web of causation for a condition with many contributing paths. Say which you chose and say what the other one would have missed, since that comparison is where the analysis row lives.

Populate the model with your own setting
Fill each element with something specific to the group you defined. Host factors that are actually present in that age band, environmental conditions that actually exist in that county, rather than a generic list that would fit any population anywhere.

State one comparison before you finish
A single figure means nothing on its own. Even in an opening piece, put your population's figure beside a state or national figure, or beside the same population in an earlier period, so the reader can see whether the problem is unusual. This habit is the one the whole course is built on.

Evidence craft for population sources
Name the surveillance system, not the website. A figure belongs to a data collection with a name, a method and a geography. Saying which system produced it, and which years it covers, is what lets a reader judge the number. A citation pointing only at a landing page tells them nothing about how the count was made.
Check the geography of every figure you borrow. National data describes a national population. If your defined group is one county, a national rate is a comparison rather than a description, and the sentence has to say which it is being used as. This confusion starts in opening papers and survives into final ones if it is not caught now.
Give every number a base and a period. Write 214 of the 5,600 residents in that age band during a two year window rather than a bare percentage. A rate is a fraction with the bottom hidden, and in this course the bottom is where the points are.
Keep sources current unless the sentence says otherwise. Where your guide sets no rule, five years is a workable default for surveillance figures, and older material is fine when the sentence explains why: a foundational description of a causal model does not expire the way a prevalence estimate does.
Five mistakes that cost points in this week's territory
- A population nobody could count. Vulnerable adults or the elderly community leaves the reader unable to tell who is in and who is out, and every later figure inherits the vagueness.
- The population changing mid-paper. Opening with one county and reporting national figures without saying so quietly swaps the group the paper is about.
- A model applied because it was taught. Forcing agent, host and environment onto a condition with no single agent produces an agent section that says lifestyle and stops.
- Risk factors listed as personal habits. Diet and exercise with no community or structural element turns a population problem into individual advice in the first week of the course.
- One number, no comparison. A figure presented as self-evidently alarming cannot be judged, and it teaches a habit that will cost more in later stages than it does here.

- Every figure in the paper belongs to that population or is labelled as a comparison
- Each number carries its base and the years it covers
- The causal model is chosen with a stated reason rather than by default
- At least one contributor sits above the individual level
