Know your instruments before you start. The nursing literature lives primarily in a dedicated nursing and allied health database, with the large medical index and the systematic-review library as companions, and your student login through the university library reaches all of them. Check publication type before celebrating a result. Databases index editorials, letters, news columns, and continuing-education pieces alongside research. Watch for journals that flatter and take. If an unfamiliar journal's articles look thin, its website promises implausibly fast publication, or it sits outside the databases your library licenses, treat it with suspicion. Sourcing from the licensed databases rather than the open web is your structural protection, and one sentence noting that protection reads as information literacy, which is the very competency this week grades.

Five mistakes that cost points in this week's territory

  • The unrepeatable search. A write-up with no terms, no combinations, and no counts reports an outcome without a method, and method is the assignment.
  • One keyword, one database, done. A single-term search in a single source demonstrates none of the week's skills and usually misses most of the relevant literature.
  • Limits with no reasons. A five-year window and an English filter are defensible choices, but only if you defend them; unexplained limits read as habits, not decisions.
  • Non-research sources in the selection. An editorial or magazine feature presented as a research article is the deduction graders find fastest.

Can I just use Google Scholar?
Use it as a scout, never as the search of record. The free scholar engine is genuinely useful for orientation: it shows you quickly whether literature exists, surfaces the vocabulary authors use, and sometimes finds a key article the databases index under an unexpected heading. But it cannot do what this assignment grades. My search returns almost nothing. What now?
Diagnose before you panic, because empty yields have three distinct causes with three distinct fixes. The first is vocabulary: the literature discusses your concept under a different term, which is why the synonym list and subject-heading check exist; fix by expanding the OR side of your search. The second is over-restriction: too many concepts joined by AND, or limits stacked too aggressively; fix by removing one element at a time and watching the count respond. The third is a genuinely sparse literature, which is a finding, not a failure. If widening the population and relaxing the date window still yields little, document the escalation, select the nearest relevant studies, and say plainly that the evidence base for your exact question is thin. A paper that demonstrates a competent search of a sparse literature scores as well as one that harvests a rich literature, because the graded skill is the searching.
How old can my articles be?
Follow your section's stated window first, because many sections set one explicitly, and instructions outrank strategy. Where the choice is yours, the working convention in evidence assignments is roughly the last five years, stretching toward ten when a literature is small, and your write-up should state the window you used and why. Two refinements make the answer look like judgment rather than rule-following. First, foundational works are citable beyond any window when you are naming where a concept came from, provided current sources carry the clinical claims. Second, recency matters most where practice changes fast; a five-year-old article on a stable assessment principle and a five-year-old article on a rapidly evolving protocol are not equally current, and one sentence acknowledging that difference shows the grader you understand why date limits exist instead of merely obeying them.
