What NR-715 Week 3 asks for
Start with the moment the confusion actually shows up. A nurse practitioner running a school-based health center wants to know whether her adolescent depression screening workflow catches the students it should. If she asks whether a screening approach detects depression better than another, she has asked a research question, and answering it well requires design, sampling, control and consent machinery that a practice doctorate does not exist to build. If she asks why a screening approach already recommended by a national body is being delivered to fewer than half the eligible students in her three schools, and what would change that, she has asked a practice scholarship question. Same clinic, same topic, entirely different degree.
The territory this stage covers is that split at every level. Question type: does it work, versus why is what works not happening here. Knowledge relationship: generating it, versus moving it. Method family: research design and inference, versus quality improvement and implementation methodology. Sample logic: a sample chosen to support generalization, versus a population defined by who actually walks through your doors. Rigor: internal validity protected by design, versus fidelity, measurement stability and honest attribution across a real system that never stops changing. Product: a manuscript for a scientific audience, versus a report, a toolkit, a protocol and a presentation for people with authority to act.
The stage also expects you to resist two easy errors in opposite directions. One is treating practice scholarship as a lighter version of research, which insults the methodology and produces projects that measure nothing. The other is smuggling research posture into a practice project, which produces hypotheses, control groups and claims of causality that a site-level improvement effort cannot support. Doctoral graders mark both, and they mark the second harder.

Organize your body around question type, knowledge relationship, method, rigor, audience and product. A paper structured as a paragraph about the PhD followed by a paragraph about the DNP will read as two summaries, and comparison rows score the analysis you did not do.

Define rigor separately for each side
Say what rigor means in a design meant to isolate an effect, then what it means in a project meant to change a system: measurement defined before the change starts, fidelity tracked, data collected the same way each cycle, and rival explanations named rather than dismissed.

Evidence craft for a doctoral comparison
Source both sides from scholarship, not from program pages. There is a substantial peer-reviewed literature debating the roles, the boundaries and the tensions between the two doctorates, including critical voices. Using it turns your comparison into a contribution to an existing conversation rather than a summary of two web pages.
Cite implementation and improvement methodology by name. If you claim practice scholarship has its own rigor, you have to show the methods that supply it. Naming the reporting standards and evaluation approaches that govern improvement work is what converts that claim from assertion into evidence.
Represent the research side fairly. A comparison written to flatter your own degree is visible immediately. State what controlled designs buy that a site-level project cannot, and be exact about it: they rule out rival explanations you will only be able to argue about.
Attach numbers to the practice example with their base. If you use screening completion at your site, write the count over the eligible total across a stated period. One hundred and nine of 402 eligible students in one semester is usable evidence; twenty-seven percent alone is not.
Avoid causal verbs for site-level work. An improvement project reports change over time in a system where other things were also changing. Improved after implementation is defensible; caused a reduction is a claim your design cannot carry, and doctoral graders in this course mark it every time.
Five mistakes that cost points in this week's territory
- Two summaries side by side. A paragraph on each doctorate is description. Dimensions compared across both is the analysis the rows are scoring.
- Ranking the degrees. Arguing that one is harder or more valuable answers a question nobody asked and usually replaces the analysis entirely.
- Treating quality improvement as informal. Improvement methodology has standards, reporting conventions and its own literature, and describing it as the practical option gives away the rigor argument.
- Research vocabulary in a practice frame. Hypotheses, control groups, generalizability and statistical power applied to a site project signal that the distinction has not landed.
- Calling the culminating work a dissertation or thesis. The product is a change implemented and evaluated with a report for a practice audience, and the wrong noun undoes several paragraphs of correct reasoning.
