  1. Sort the studies by what they say

    Reorganize the table into finding clusters: studies pointing the same direction, studies pointing against, studies answering an adjacent question. This sorting is the synthesis's skeleton, and it cannot be done from memory of the abstracts.

  2. Draft the strongest claim the biggest cluster can carry

    Write the supported conclusion in one sentence, then check it against the cluster's designs and samples: if the sentence claims more than the architecture funds, trim the verb before trimming the idea.

  3. Give the dissent its own paragraph

    The studies that point the other way get presented at full strength, with the likeliest explanation for the divergence: population, dose, setting, outcome definition. Dissent handled openly strengthens the position; dissent buried weakens the writer.

  4. Walk the edge of the evidence

    Name what the set cannot answer: the population never enrolled, the follow-up never extended, the comparison never run. This boundary paragraph is where graders separate synthesis from advocacy.

  5. State the position with its conditions attached

    The concluding sentence carries the change supported, the conditions under which the support holds, and the confidence the set justifies. Conditional is not weak; conditional is calibrated.

  6. Point the position at next week, then format

If any single study's name appears more than a few times across the section, the writing has slipped back into summary; themes lead, and citations follow them.

Weighing a body of evidence without vote-counting

The crudest synthesis error is arithmetic: seven studies for, two against, motion carries. Weight comes from architecture and execution, so one large randomized trial can legitimately outweigh five small observational studies pointing the other way, and your prose has to show that weighting rather than tallying heads. Write "the strongest designs converge on" rather than "most studies found."

Keep effect sizes in the argument, not just directions. Studies can agree that an intervention helps while disagreeing enormously about how much, and a synthesis that reports direction without magnitude misses what implementation will need next week: a small consistent effect and a large inconsistent one imply different projects.

Guard the boundary between evidence and inference. When you extend a finding from the studied population to yours, that extension is your reasoning, and it should be visibly labeled as such with the difference acknowledged. The synthesis earns trust exactly at the moments it distinguishes what the literature established from what you are arguing on top of it.

Five mistakes that cost points in a synthesis week

  • An annotated bibliography with a new heading. One paragraph per study, in search order, is the shape faculty mark down most reliably this week.
  • Dissent managed by omission. The divergent study you skip is usually one the grader knows, and its absence reads as either poor searching or motivated forgetting.
  • A conclusion that outruns the set. Universal language stacked on two modest cohorts fails the calibration row on contact.
  • Every study weighted equally. Citing a case series and a large trial in the same breath, undifferentiated, discards the appraisal week's entire product.
  • The gap treated as embarrassment. Evidence running out is a finding; hiding it forfeits the boundary paragraph where synthesis scores highest.

All my studies agree. Is a synthesis without conflict suspicious?
Sometimes, and it is worth one honest check before celebrating. Uniform agreement can mean the question is genuinely settled, in which case say so and note that your project is implementation of settled evidence rather than adjudication. But it can also mean the search favored one direction, the outcome definitions varied enough to hide disagreement, or publication itself filtered the dissent. Address the possibility in two sentences, state which explanation you believe and why, and your agreement paragraph becomes stronger than most conflict paragraphs.
How do I weigh one large trial against several small studies that disagree with it?
Open the architecture before the arithmetic. Ask what the large trial's population, setting and outcome definitions share with yours, and whether the small studies vary in some dimension the trial held fixed, because apparent conflict is often the same intervention measured in different worlds. If the designs are genuinely comparable, weight by rigor and precision, and say you are doing so. Whichever way you land, show the reasoning in the text; the conclusion matters less to the rubric than the visible method for reaching it.
Can my synthesis conclude that the evidence is insufficient?
Yes, and done well it is a sophisticated result, but it changes what your remaining weeks must do. State what the set establishes, where it falls short, and precisely what evidence would close the question. Then pivot the project accordingly: implementation of the best available option with tight measurement, or a proposal built around generating the missing local data. What you cannot do is conclude insufficiency and stop, because the capstone still owes a defensible next action, and the ability to act sensibly under thin evidence is itself the skill being graded.
