What NR-662 Week 7 asks for

A student finishing a fluoride varnish project in a family practice arrives at this stage with six separate files: a problem statement, a microsystem assessment, an evidence table, a measurement plan, a methods write-up and a results section. Read end to end, they contradict each other in small ways. The problem statement talks about children under five, the measurement plan says twelve to sixty months, and the results report visits rather than children. Each file was fine alone. As a manuscript it is not yet one piece of work, and the reconciliation is the real task of the week.

A manuscript is judged on completeness and reproducibility. A reader with no connection to the practice should be able to follow the problem, understand the setting well enough to judge transferability, see exactly what was done, and reconstruct how the numbers were produced. That standard is higher than a coursework standard, and it is why capstone manuscripts usually shed the reflective voice that served the earlier stages. What remains is a compact scholarly account with the writer largely out of the frame.

The discussion is where most of the new writing happens. It has four jobs: to say what the result means in plain terms, to compare that against what the literature predicted, to name the rival explanations honestly, and to say what should happen next at the site and beyond it.     An abstract that cannot be written without adding facts absent from the body is telling you the body is incomplete. Draft it in the structure your target publication uses, then fix whatever the exercise exposed.

  3. Compress the literature into the introduction's job

    The manuscript introduction is not the evidence table. It establishes that the problem matters, that something is known to help, and that a gap exists in this setting. Most of your week three writing becomes two paragraphs, and that is correct.

  4. Build the discussion around interpretation, not repetition

    Open with what the result means in one sentence, compare it against what the literature predicted, then work through the rival explanations you can name. Restating results in the discussion is the most common structural fault in capstone manuscripts.

  5. Write limitations with direction and magnitude

    Say which way each limitation would bias the finding and roughly how much it could matter. A single-site pre and post design with a modest denominator has specific, nameable weaknesses; a generic list of small sample and short duration demonstrates nothing.

Evidence craft for manuscript writing

Write the methods against a reporting guideline. Published standards for reporting quality improvement work exist precisely to make studies reproducible, and following one gives you a completeness check no proofreader can match. Name the guideline in the methods so a reviewer knows what standard you held yourself to.

Keep tense discipline throughout. Past tense for what was done and found, present tense for what remains true and for what the literature says. Slipping into present tense for your own results is a small error that repeats on every page and marks the writing row down without any single sentence being wrong.

Make every number appear once, authoritatively. A count that appears in the abstract, the results and a table must be identical in all three. Discrepancies are the fastest way to lose a reviewer's trust, and in a document assembled from six earlier files they are almost guaranteed unless you check deliberately.

Cite for claims, not for decoration. By this stage each citation should be doing a specific job: establishing prevalence, supporting the intervention choice, or providing the comparison your discussion argues against. References carried forward from earlier drafts because they were already there add length and dilute the argument.

Protect the site in the manuscript itself. Describe the practice by type, size and population, not by name or location, and check figures and tables for anything that would narrow it to one building. Manuscripts travel further than coursework, and de-identification has to survive the transition.

  • Stapled sections. Six documents joined with headings still read as six documents, and inconsistent definitions between them are visible on the first careful pass.
  • A discussion that repeats results. Restating the numbers uses the space where interpretation and rival explanation should be.
  • Conclusions bigger than the design. A single-site pre and post project cannot recommend broad adoption, and a conclusion that does invites the harshest possible reading.
  • Generic limitations. Small sample and short time frame, without direction or magnitude, is a sentence that appears in every weak manuscript.
  • No target publication. Formatting to nothing in particular means the manuscript is not submission-ready, which is the standard this course is actually asking for.

How do I pick a target journal without wasting a week on it?
Work backwards from where the evidence you cited was published. If three of your key sources appeared in ambulatory or primary care nursing publications, those are the journals whose readers care about your question, and their author guidance is a short document you can read in twenty minutes. Check four things: whether they publish quality improvement reports at all, the word limit, the required structure, and the reference style. Then check one more thing that students routinely skip, which is whether they want a structured abstract and in what headings. Choosing a plausible target and formatting to it fully is worth far more than agonizing over prestige. The point of the exercise is to demonstrate that you can meet an external standard, and any real publication whose scope matches your work provides that standard.
My results are thin. Should the manuscript be shorter?
The results section should be proportionate to what you found, but the manuscript should not shrink overall, because the sections that carry weight when the effect is small are the methods and the discussion. A thin result with a meticulous methods section is publishable as a feasibility report; a thin result with a vague methods section is not usable by anyone. Spend the space on describing exactly what was implemented and what delivery looked like, then use the discussion to reason carefully about why the effect was limited and what a better-resourced test would change. Say plainly what the project can and cannot support. Reviewers, and capstone graders, read proportion as a sign of scholarly judgment, and a modest claim backed completely reads far better than a large claim held up by a short results paragraph.
Do I write the manuscript in first person since it was my project?
Usually not, and your target publication's guidance settles it. Improvement manuscripts are conventionally written with the project rather than the author as the subject, which produces sentences such as the intervention was introduced in the rooming workflow rather than I introduced a change. That is not modesty; it keeps the reader's attention on what was done rather than on who did it, and it makes the account easier to reproduce. Where first person is permitted, use it sparingly and only where agency genuinely matters, such as describing your role in training staff. What does not change either way is the standard of specificity: whichever voice you write in, the reader must be able to tell which role performed each step, and passive constructions that hide the actor are a problem in both.
