Synthesis is the stage where a pile of appraised sources becomes an argument for one specific change, and the difference between a synthesis and a summary is organization. A summary is arranged by study. A synthesis is arranged by finding, with the studies inside each finding compared against one another, and it ends with a recommendation that names what the evidence supports and what it does not. Your section may print this as NR 611 or NR611; it is the same course. Chamberlain publishes no syllabi outside Canvas. What NR-611 Week 5 asks for
Take a project aimed at completing the adolescent vaccine series in a family practice. The retained set contains a systematic review reporting modest gains from reminder and recall systems, two trials in which standing orders produced larger changes, a health department evaluation describing an outreach program that worked and cost more than a small practice could carry, and a guideline recommending assessment at every visit regardless of the reason for the visit. Summarized study by study, that is four paragraphs and no direction. Synthesized by finding, it becomes one argument: reminders help a little and are cheap, delegation of authority helps more and requires a policy decision, outreach helps most and is out of reach, and the recommending body's standard is already being missed at visits the practice controls. The recommendation now writes itself, and it is defensible because the reader watched it being assembled.
The second demand is honest weighting. Different evidence types carry different authority and speak to different questions. Trials and reviews speak to whether a change works; implementation reports speak to whether it can be done in a setting like yours; guidelines speak to what the standard is. A synthesis that treats all three as interchangeable produces a recommendation that sounds supported and cannot survive a question from a practice council.
The boundary that holds across this course. Written and preparatory work is the only layer supported here. Build the evidence table before writing any prose
One row per source with design, setting, population, intervention detail, outcome measured, effect and limitation. The table is where synthesis actually happens; the prose only reports what the table already shows.

Sort the table by finding rather than by author
Group rows that speak to the same question and name each group. Those group names become your subheadings, which is what converts a summary into a synthesis in one structural move.

Compare inside each group before moving on
Say where the studies agree, where they diverge, and what in their methods or populations explains the divergence. Agreement is worth one sentence; disagreement is worth a paragraph.

Separate effect from implementability
Write one strand on whether the change works and a second on whether it can be delivered in a setting resembling yours. Conflating them is what produces recommendations no site can act on.

Weigh the set explicitly
State which sources carry the most weight in your recommendation and why, using design, setting fit and recency rather than how convenient the conclusion was.

Close with a recommendation bounded by its evidence
Name the change, the strength of support behind it, and the part of it that rests on inference rather than on evidence. A recommendation with its limits stated is the strongest thing you can write here.

Evidence craft for synthesis writing
Report effects in units a practice council would recognize. Percentage points of completion, visits avoided per hundred patients, days shortened. A synthesis that reports significance without magnitude cannot support a decision, because nobody can weigh it against the cost.
Keep causal language matched to design. A trial supports reduced; a cohort study supports was associated with; an improvement report supports was followed by. Population health rubrics mark this precisely, and it is the easiest correction to make before submission.
Attribute guideline strength as the body stated it. Most recommending organizations publish their own grading scheme, so report the recommendation together with the strength and the evidence level the body assigned rather than describing it in your own adjectives.
Name the setting of every implementation source. A program that succeeded in an urban health department with three dedicated staff is evidence about a resourced setting. Say so, then say what your site has instead, because that comparison is the whole value of the implementability strand.
Give the size of every study you lean on. A finding drawn from a trial of 1,400 participants across nine practices and a finding drawn from a single clinic with 38 patients belong in the same synthesis and not at the same weight. Put the sample size and the number of sites in the clause where the study first carries an argument, so the reader can weigh it without turning back to the table. Population health proposals are frequently built on small implementation reports, which is legitimate, and it is only legitimate when the scale is visible.
State the gap without apology. If nothing in your set tested the intervention in a population resembling yours, write that as a finding, say what it means for the confidence of your recommendation, and let the proposal carry the uncertainty openly. Graders reward that; reviewers require it.
Five mistakes that cost points in this week's territory
- An annotated bibliography with headings. One paragraph per study, in the order they were found, is the definitive signature of a summary rather than a synthesis.
- Contradictions quietly dropped. A study that disagrees with your plan is the most useful item in the set, and omitting it is the fastest way to lose credibility with a careful grader.
- Effect and feasibility mixed together. A recommendation that works everywhere and can be delivered nowhere reads as a paper that never separated the two questions.
- Guideline strength described loosely. Writing that a body strongly recommends something when it graded the evidence as limited misrepresents the source.
- A recommendation broader than the evidence. Proposing a bundle when only one component was studied means the proposal cannot say what would be responsible for any change.
