The distinction this stage runs on is between permitted and defensible. The previous stage taught you to establish what a requirement allows. This one starts where that answer ends, because a great deal of what happens to clinical data is entirely lawful and still asks a question the law does not answer. A report built for care coordination that quietly becomes a scheduling filter, a risk score that decides who receives outreach, a documented social observation that follows a family through every subsequent visit: all permitted, all consequential, none of them settled by a privacy provision.
Stewardship is the useful word. It carries the idea that information collected during care is held on trust for the person it describes, and that the holder acquires obligations that persist after the encounter. Once you frame the paper that way, the analysis has direction: identify what the data was collected for, identify what it is now being used for, and argue whether the second use is compatible with the first, who benefits, who bears the risk, and what the person described would say if they were told.
Expect a written analysis of one data use, sometimes with an ethical framework specified and sometimes left to you, occasionally paired with a posted response weighing a scenario. Every element in a record was captured for a reason, and the reason is usually clinical care of that individual. State it plainly, then state the new purpose beside it. The distance between the two is the ethical question, and naming that distance is the move most papers skip.

Evidence craft for ethical writing about information
Attribute the framework and use its own vocabulary. Whether you work from principles, from a professional code, or from a published stewardship model, name the source and the year and then use its terms consistently. Borrowing the shape of a framework without naming it is the citation failure graders catch most often in ethics writing, and it is entirely avoidable.
Support empirical claims empirically. The statement that a data element performs differently across populations is a research finding, not an ethical intuition, and there is published work on measurement bias, documentation language and outreach disparities. One cited study behind that claim converts a paragraph a reader could dismiss into one they cannot.
Keep description separate from judgment. Write what the system does in neutral terms first, then judge it in a clearly marked move. Papers that editorialize inside the description lose the reader's trust early, and once a grader senses the conclusion was fixed before the analysis began, the analysis rows suffer regardless of what the writing does later.
De-identify and generalize every example. If the case comes from your own setting, remove names, dates, the practice, the record product and any combination of details that would identify a family or a colleague. A school-age patient in an ambulatory pediatric panel is a complete clinical description and points at nobody.
Resist the impulse to conclude that the use should stop. Almost every secondary use in this territory has real clinical value, and a recommendation to abandon it reads as unserious. Conditions score better than prohibitions: who reviews the output, what error rate triggers a re-examination, what the patient is told, and which decision the data may never make on its own.
Five mistakes that cost points in this week's territory
- An essay about ethics in general. Without one element and one decision fixed at the start, every paragraph drifts and no framework has anything to grip.
- Frameworks listed rather than applied. Three named approaches in the introduction and none of them used in the body is the most visible structural failure in this stage.
- Repeating the previous stage's legal analysis. If the paper concludes that the use is permitted and stops, it has answered the compliance question and left the ethical one untouched.
- Harm asserted without a bearer. Potential harm to patients names nobody. Say which patients, through which mechanism, and what happens to them.
- No counterargument anywhere. An ethical case with no opposition on the page is a position statement, and position statements do not score on analysis rows.
