What NR-505NP Week 6 asks for

The territory is comparison. A synthesis reads across the studies you appraised and answers three questions the individual critiques could not: where do these papers agree, where do they conflict, and what has nobody asked. Agreement is worth reporting only with its texture attached, meaning across which designs, in which populations and at what magnitudes. Conflict is where the marks are, because an honest synthesis explains why two studies disagreed rather than averaging them into a vague middle. Differences in who was enrolled, in how the outcome was measured, in the intensity of the intervention and in follow up length explain most disagreements you will meet.

The mechanical half of the week is the evidence table, which is what makes comparison possible at all. Prose written before the table exists always collapses into a study by study tour, because your memory holds one paper at a time and a table holds all of them at once. Built properly, the table does the analysis for you: read down the population column and the applicability paragraph writes itself; read down the outcome measurement column and you can see instantly which studies are comparable.

Deliverable shape here is often a synthesis section with the table appended, sometimes as part of a larger paper carried across several weeks. Six moves that turn a set of appraised papers into a synthesis with an argument in it.

  1. Fill the table completely before writing a sentence

    Every cell gets filled from the article itself, and any blank you cannot fill is information. A missing attrition figure, a missing interval or an unnamed instrument all belong in the table as stated absences rather than as empty space, because those absences shape what your synthesis can conclude.

  2. Sort the table by something meaningful

    Order the rows by design strength, by population, by direction of finding or by publication year, and try more than one order. The sort that makes a pattern jump out is telling you how to organize your prose, and it often reveals that the disagreement in your set runs along a line you had not noticed.

  3. Write the findings as headings, then place the studies under them

    Draft three or four claim-shaped headings, along the lines of the intervention shortened the outcome in older adults but not in mixed age samples. Each becomes a paragraph, and each study appears wherever it has something to say. Any study that fits under no heading is either off question or is telling you a heading is missing.

  4. Explain every disagreement you find

    When two papers conflict, look for the mechanical reason before you reach for a conceptual one. Different populations, different doses, different outcome instruments and different follow up windows account for most conflicts. Naming the reason converts a contradiction into a finding about when the intervention works.

  5. Weight the studies openly

    Say which papers you are leaning on and why, using design, sample and closeness to your population as the reasons. A synthesis in which every study carries equal weight has not appraised anything, and the appraisal you did in the previous weeks was the point of doing it.

  6. Name the gap in the shape of a study

    Close by describing what has not been asked, specifically enough that someone could design it. A gap written as more research is needed earns nothing; a gap written as no controlled comparison in a named population with a named outcome over a named window is the sentence that carries your project into the following weeks.

Evidence craft for synthesis writing

Put the claim first and the citations after it. A synthesis sentence names the finding and then lists the studies supporting it in parentheses. A sentence that begins with an author name and reports what they did has reverted to summary, and a paragraph of those is a literature tour rather than a synthesis.

Group citations honestly. Three studies cited together at the end of a sentence are being claimed to support the same thing. Check that they do, including direction and population, because a grader who opens one of them and finds a different finding will discount the whole paragraph.

Report silence as a result. Where no study in your set measured an outcome, followed patients beyond a certain point or included a population, say so explicitly. Absence is one of the few things a small evidence set can establish firmly, and it feeds directly into your recommendation.

Keep the recency rule consistent and stated. Say once, early, what publication window you applied and why, then apply it. Where you keep an older study because it remains the only controlled work in the area, justify that one exception in its own clause rather than quietly letting the rule slip.

Five mistakes that cost points in this week's territory

  • One paragraph per study. The clearest sign that synthesis never happened, and the easiest thing in the paper for a grader to spot.
  • Conflicts smoothed over. Writing that findings were mixed and moving on discards the most analytically valuable material in your set.
  • A table with unexplained blanks. An empty cell reads as work not done. A cell reading not reported reads as work done carefully.
  • Equal weight for unequal studies. If a small uncontrolled study carries the same weight in your prose as a multi-site trial, the previous weeks of appraisal were wasted.
  • A gap statement with no shape. More research is needed appears in thousands of student papers and earns points in none of them.

  • Every table cell is either filled or explicitly marked as not reported
  • Section headings state findings rather than naming authors
  • Each disagreement between studies has a stated mechanical explanation
  • The studies you lean on most are identified, with the reason given
  • At least one absence across the whole evidence set is reported as a result

Can I mix qualitative and quantitative studies in one synthesis?
Yes, and the result is usually stronger, provided you keep their jobs distinct. The quantitative strand answers whether an approach changed an outcome and by how much; the qualitative strand answers why it did or did not, and what it was like for the people involved. Structure the synthesis by finding rather than by method, so a single heading can carry both kinds of support, then be explicit about which kind of evidence supports which part of the claim. What you cannot do is pool them, count them together or treat a theme and a mean difference as the same species of result. One practical layout that works well: build two tables sharing a common set of finding headings, then write one narrative that draws from both, naming the evidence type in each sentence.
What do I do when one study contradicts everything else I found?
Give it a paragraph rather than a footnote, because outliers are where the interesting analysis lives. Start with the mechanics: check its population, its intervention intensity, its outcome instrument and its follow up against the rest of the set, since one of those four usually explains the divergence. Check its size and its design too, because a small uncontrolled study disagreeing with three trials is a different situation from a large trial disagreeing with three small surveys. Then say what you conclude and why, in a sentence that names your reasoning rather than your preference. What loses points is deleting the study, or keeping it in the table and never mentioning it in the prose, because both leave a visible mismatch between your evidence and your argument.
How current does the evidence have to be for the synthesis to hold?
Check your week's rubric first, since sections that set a window expect it applied and reported. Where none is set, a five year window is a defensible default for clinical findings, with two standing exceptions. The first is landmark work that later studies are still built on, which you keep and label as such. The second is a field where nothing recent exists, in which case the age of the evidence is itself a finding and belongs in your gap statement rather than being hidden. One more check that costs nothing: look at when the data were collected as well as when the paper was published, because a study published two years ago may describe practice from six years earlier, and in a fast moving area that distinction can change your conclusion.
