What NR-449 Week 6 asks for

Say your question has been about whether nurse-led follow-up telephone calls after discharge from a skilled nursing facility keep people from bouncing back to the hospital. By now you hold perhaps five studies: two find fewer returns among called patients, one finds no difference, one followed the wrong window to compare cleanly, and an interview study explains that patients mostly wanted the call to sort out their medication lists. Synthesis is the skill of writing what all of that says together. Not five paragraphs marching study by study, but paragraphs organized by finding: what the evidence agrees on, where it splits and why, and what nobody has yet examined.

The structural test is brutal in its simplicity, and most graders apply some version of it. Look at your topic sentences. If each one opens with an author's name, you have written a serial book report; if each one opens with a claim about the evidence, calls consistently improved medication problem detection across studies, while effects on returns diverged, you have synthesized. Sources then appear inside the paragraph as support for the claim, often two or three citations to a single sentence, which is the visual signature of synthesis a grader can spot from across the room.

This is also the stage where honesty about disagreement earns real points. Undergraduate writers tend to sand contradictions away, keeping only agreeable sources, because conflict feels like a flaw in their work. It is the opposite. A split finding examined for its cause, different follow-up windows, different caller training, different populations, is the most analytically rich material the week offers, and rubric language about critical analysis is largely pointing at exactly that move. Work the split with the matrix in front of you rather than in the abstract: if the study that found no difference placed its call within a day of discharge, while the two studies that found fewer returns called a week later, after the first refill had failed and the first confusion about a doubled dose had surfaced, then the disagreement is not noise, it is timing. One sentence naming that timing difference does more analytic work than a page of careful summary.

The NR-449 Week 6 method, step by step

Six moves from a pile of summaries to one written argument.

  1. Matrix building

    Before drafting, put every study in a grid: citation, design, sample, setting, main finding, direction of effect. The matrix is not usually submitted, but every strong synthesis has one behind it, because patterns are visible in rows that are invisible in prose.

  2. Finding alignment

    Read down the finding column and cluster: which results point the same way, which oppose, which answer adjacent questions. Each cluster becomes a candidate paragraph, and the clusters, not the studies, become your outline.

  3. Claim formation

    Write one sentence per cluster stating what the evidence collectively shows, with a verb honest to the strength: demonstrates, suggests, is mixed on, has not examined. These sentences are your topic sentences, and calibrating their verbs is half the grade. Test each verb against the rows that support it: demonstrates needs consistent results from strong designs, suggests fits a single study or a modest but agreeing set, and is mixed on is the only honest verb once a null result sits in your matrix.

  4. Contradiction handling

    For each split finding, hunt the explanation in the methods columns of your matrix: population, dose of the intervention, outcome window, measurement. Name the most likely reason for the divergence rather than declaring a winner by preference.

  5. Gap naming

    State what the body of evidence does not contain: a population unstudied, an outcome uncounted, a setting untouched. Gaps must be findings from your matrix, not decoration; more research is needed earns nothing, while no study followed patients past ninety days earns the row.

  6. Paragraph architecture

    Draft with the claim first, evidence next, and the weight of that evidence last, using the levels you assigned earlier in the course. A claim supported by a trial and a guideline reads differently from one resting on a single improvement report, and saying so inside the paragraph is the polish move.

Evidence craft for synthesis writing

Cluster citations to claims. The mechanical signature of synthesis is more than one source attached to one sentence. If every citation in your draft stands alone at the end of its own paragraph, the structure is serial summary wearing a synthesis title, and graders read structure before they read sentences.

Rank inside the paragraph. When sources share a finding, note the strongest design among them in the same breath: an effect observed in a multisite trial and echoed in two smaller projects is led by the trial. Carrying your leveling work forward into synthesis sentences is what makes the course's arc visible in your writing.

Give mechanisms their qualitative due. Where an interview study explains why an intervention works or fails, cite it for mechanism alongside the quantitative sources cited for effect. One sentence pairing the two kinds of knowing, calls reduced returns, and patients located the value in medication sorting, is the most sophisticated sentence an undergraduate synthesis can contain.

Report the split with symmetry. When findings conflict, present both sides with their designs and sizes before offering the reconciling explanation. A synthesis that mentions the disagreeing study in a subordinate clause while championing the agreeable ones has chosen advocacy over analysis, and the imbalance is visible. Resist the counting reflex while you are there. Three sources pointing one way and one pointing the other is not a three-to-one verdict, because studies are not votes: a single well-powered multisite trial can carry more than three small single-unit projects, and four studies of a population unlike yours can lose to one that matches it. Weigh designs, samples, and fit, then say which consideration decided it.

Five mistakes that cost points in this week's territory

  • Author-name topic sentences. The single clearest marker of non-synthesis, and the first thing most graders scan for.
  • Dropping the disagreeing study. Omitting the null result you summarized two weeks ago is visible to the grader who read that summary, and it converts analysis into advocacy.
  • Equal weight for unequal designs. Citing an improvement report and a multisite trial as interchangeable support flattens the leveling work the course just taught.
  • Vague gap statements. More research is needed is a shrug; a named missing population, window, or outcome is a finding.
  • A conclusion that outruns the set. The synthesis statement may only claim what the cited body supports, at the confidence its levels justify.

Before you submit

  • Every topic sentence states a claim about the evidence, not an author
  • At least one sentence carries two or more citations
  • The divergent finding appears with its likely methodological cause
  • Evidence weight is noted where sources differ in level
  • The gap is specific enough that a study could be designed to fill it
  • The closing statement claims no more than the set supports

Questions students ask about this stage

How many sources make a real synthesis?
Your instructions set the floor; the ceiling is what you can genuinely hold in relation. Synthesis becomes possible at three sources, workable at four to six, and unwieldy past eight for a paper of undergraduate length, because every added study multiplies the comparisons you owe the reader. If your set is large, choose the sources that bear most directly on your question and say in one sentence that you prioritized directness of evidence, which is itself a defensible synthesis decision. Depth of relation among five studies will outscore surface contact with ten in nearly every rubric built for this stage.
Can qualitative and quantitative findings share a paragraph?
They can, and the pairing is often the best paragraph in the paper, provided each contributes what its design produces. The quantitative sources carry the effect claims: what changed, by how much, in whom. The qualitative source carries mechanism and meaning: why participants engaged, what they valued, where the intervention chafed. Trouble starts only when the kinds are blurred, such as citing an interview study as if it measured an outcome or using a trial to claim what an experience felt like. Keep each source attached to the type of claim it can support and the mixed paragraph reads as sophistication rather than confusion.
What do I do when my evidence is genuinely weak across the board?
Write the weakness as the finding, because it is one. A body of evidence made of small single-site projects with short follow-up supports only cautious claims, and a synthesis that says so, then specifies what stronger study the question needs, has done exactly what the assignment tests. Resist the urge to inflate: graders who have read your appraisal week know what your set contains, and a confident conclusion perched on thin sources scores worse than a calibrated one. The honest closing register is that current evidence is suggestive but limited, the strongest signal sits in this finding, and confidence awaits a study with these named properties.
