NR-449 Week 2 Literature Search Strategy: How to Write It

The short answer

The second stage of NR-449 is usually where the library replaces the lecture as the room you work in: with a question formed, the arc of an evidence course moves to searching for the studies that could answer it, and the written work becomes an account of how you searched, where, with what terms, and with what results. Your section may print this as NR 449 or NR449; it is the same course. Chamberlain publishes no syllabi outside Canvas. What NR-449 Week 2 asks for

Suppose your question concerns medication discrepancies when residents move from hospital to skilled nursing care, a transition where orders get rewritten by new prescribers reading incomplete records. The literature on that problem exists, and it is large, but it does not organize itself under the words you would use at the nurses' station. Databases index studies under controlled vocabularies and formal phrases, and the whole craft of this stage is translating your bedside language into theirs, then proving on paper that you did it systematically rather than by luck.

The deliverable at this stage of an evidence course is typically some form of documented search: a written narrative of your strategy, a table of databases, terms, limits and result counts, an annotated set of the articles you kept, or a discussion post walking through how you found your best source. The grading logic underneath every version is the same. A search is reproducible when another person could run it from your description and land on the same articles. If your account says you searched several databases and found good studies, it fails that test; if it names the database, the exact string, the filters, and the number returned at each step, it passes.

Undergraduate evidence courses grade the process more heavily than the product this week, and students routinely misread that emphasis. The temptation is to hide the messy reality, the search that returned four thousand results, then zero, then finally a workable forty, and present only the tidy ending. Resist it. The narrowing itself is the demonstration of skill. A paper that shows a broad string, the problem with it, the refinement, and the improved yield is displaying exactly the judgment the rubric was built to reward.

The NR-449 Week 2 method, step by step

Six moves that turn a question into a documented, reproducible search.

  1. Term harvesting

    For each component of your question, list every word the literature might use for it. Medication discrepancy also travels as medication reconciliation, medication error at transition, and order discrepancy. Building the synonym bank first prevents the false conclusion that no evidence exists.

  2. Database selection

    Choose two or three databases and be ready to say why each one: what discipline it covers, what your question needs from it. The rationale sentence is often worth as much as the search itself, because it shows you know the tools are different rather than interchangeable.

  3. String construction

    Combine synonyms with OR inside each concept and concepts with AND between them, and record the exact string you ran, capitalization and all. Paraphrased strings cannot be reproduced, and reproducibility is the standard your write-up will be read against.

  4. Filter application

    Apply limits deliberately and one at a time: publication window, language, peer review, age group. Note what each filter did to your count. A limit applied without a reason is a decision you cannot defend in the narrative.

  5. Result triage

    Screen titles first, then abstracts, against inclusion rules you wrote down before screening. Keep a tally of how many you excluded and broadly why. This is the step that turns a pile of results into a defensible article set.

  6. Search documentation

    Write the account while the browser tabs are still open. Database, date searched, string, limits, count at each stage, final keepers. Reconstructing a search from memory three days later produces the vague narrative that loses the process points.

Evidence craft for search reporting

Report the search like a method, because it is one. Past tense, first person where permitted, exact values. I searched, I limited, I excluded. The narrative is a procedure another person could follow, and every vague verb in it, explored, looked into, checked, is a step they cannot repeat.

Counts are the currency of this stage. Numbers of results at each step do the persuading. A narrative that runs from 3,214 results to 187 after limits to 12 after screening tells a story of judgment applied; the same narrative without counts is an unverifiable claim of effort.

Name the vocabulary you used, not just the words. If a database offers a controlled indexing vocabulary and you used it, say so and show the mapped term. If you searched free text only, say that too. Graders in evidence courses read this distinction as the line between a student who understands databases and one who types into boxes.

Keep source quality claims out of the search section. Whether an article is strong evidence is next month's question in the course arc. This week you demonstrate retrieval, and the only quality claims that belong here are the screening rules you applied, stated as rules rather than verdicts.

Five mistakes that cost points in this week's territory

  • The invisible search. Presenting five good articles with no account of how they were found earns the content and forfeits the process, and this week the process is the assignment.
  • One database, one string, done. A single search in a single tool is a lookup, not a strategy, and rubrics at this stage usually expect breadth with reasons.
  • Paraphrasing your own strings. Reporting that you searched for terms about medication safety in transitions is unreproducible. Paste the string as run.
  • Filters with no rationale. A five-year limit is defensible for a fast-moving topic and lazy for a sparse one; either way the reasoning has to appear.
  • Letting one perfect article end the search. Finding a single strong study and stopping reads as luck. The assignment is the map, not the treasure.

Before you submit

  • Every database is named with a one-sentence rationale
  • Each search string appears exactly as it was run
  • Each limit carries a reason and its effect on the count
  • Result numbers appear at every stage from raw to retained
  • Screening rules were stated before the screening they governed
  • The final article set is listed in the citation style your section requires

Questions students ask about this stage

Is Google Scholar acceptable as one of my databases?
Treat it as a supplement and check your section's instructions before counting it toward a database requirement. Scholar is excellent for chasing a known citation or checking who has cited a study you like, but it does not expose a controlled vocabulary, its filters are coarse, and its result counts fluctuate, which undermines the reproducibility your write-up is graded on. The safest pattern is to run your documented strategy in the library's nursing and health databases, then mention Scholar honestly as the place you verified coverage or found one additional source, with that use labeled for what it was.
How many articles do I actually need to keep?
Follow the number in your instructions first; where none is given, retain more than you think the next assignments need, because attrition is coming. Some of what survives abstract screening will fall apart on full reading, and later stages of the course typically ask you to appraise and then synthesize, which consumes articles quickly. A workable rule for a transition-of-care question is to keep every study that directly measures your outcome in your population, plus one or two that are close on population but strong on design. Keeping a source now costs nothing; needing one in week six that you discarded costs an evening.
My searches keep returning almost nothing. Is my question broken?
Usually the string is broken, not the question. Work through three repairs in order. First, expand your synonym bank, because the literature may index your concept under a term you have not tried, and transitions research is notorious for this. Second, drop your most restrictive concept and see what returns; if removing the setting term opens the floodgates, your evidence may live in hospital studies whose findings you can discuss for your setting. Third, widen the publication window. Only after those repairs fail on multiple databases should you conclude the evidence is genuinely thin, and even then that finding is writable: a documented sparse yield, honestly reported, is a legitimate and often well-graded result in an evidence course.
