NR-709B Week 2 Restating the Result: How to Write It

The short answer

A discussion opens by saying what happened, once, in a sentence the design can actually pay for. In our teaching order that is the second stage of this 192-hour block: the aim restated, the primary measure reported with its denominator and window, the process and balancing measures beside it, and a plain statement of what a pre-post evaluation on one service can and cannot support. Get this paragraph right and the rest of the discussion has something to argue against. Your section may print this as NR 709B or NR709B; it is the same course. What NR-709B Week 2 asks for

An emergency department runs a project to shorten the interval between triage recognition of possible sepsis and the first antibiotic dose. When the block opens, the writer has a table. The temptation, universal and expensive, is to open the discussion with the sentence the writer has been waiting eight months to write: the intervention reduced time to antibiotics. That sentence is a causal claim, and a single-service before-and-after evaluation with no comparison group cannot pay for it. The sentence that survives review is duller and stronger: median time from triage recognition to first dose was 82 minutes across 96 eligible presentations in the baseline quarter and 54 minutes across 104 presentations in the post-implementation quarter, measured by the same rule from the same report.

This stage is about the difference between those two sentences and about training your hand to write the second one automatically. Restating the result is not a summary of the results section. It is the bridge: it selects what matters, attaches each figure to the aim it was meant to answer, and sets the ceiling on every claim that follows. A discussion whose opening overreaches spends the rest of its length either defending an indefensible sentence or quietly contradicting it.

The boundary that governs this manual. The clinical work, the practicum hours that produced it, the hour log, encounter counts, site paperwork and every preceptor or mentor evaluation are your own record of your own activity. They are never drafted, reconstructed, estimated or edited toward acceptability with help of any kind. Only the written layer is supportable: how a result is stated in defensible language, how measures are ordered, how a paragraph carries its denominators. Any real case or data appearing in your writing is de-identified before it is written, not afterwards.

Expect this stage's deliverable to be a section of your final scholarly document, sometimes submitted alongside a posted response comparing your measure to a peer's. Whatever the format, write it as a component of the finished manuscript rather than as homework. A 192-hour block is long enough that everything drafted here should be reusable, and short enough that rewriting from scratch in week seven is a real cost.

The NR-709B Week 2 method, step by step

Six moves for restating a result without inflating it.

  1. Put the aim back on the page first

    Quote your own aim statement with its population, measure, direction, size and date. The result only means something against the target it was set for, and a reader should not have to page backwards to find it.

  2. Write the primary measure in one complete sentence

    Numerator, denominator, period, and the rule used to define eligibility, for both baseline and post-implementation. If the two figures came from different extraction methods, that clause belongs in the same sentence, not in a limitation eight pages later.

  3. Report the process measures next

    The outcome tells the reader what happened; the process measures tell them whether the intervention was actually delivered. Uptake, completion and fidelity figures belong here because they decide how the outcome should be read.

  4. State the balancing measure honestly

    Whatever you promised to watch for harm or displacement gets reported whether or not it moved. Omitting a balancing measure that drifted is the fastest way to lose a committee's trust in every other figure.

  5. Name the design and its ceiling in one sentence

    Say what the evaluation was and what that design supports. An uncontrolled before-and-after comparison on one service supports association and coincidence in time. Writing that limit yourself is stronger than having a reader write it for you.

  6. Strip every evaluative adjective from the paragraph

    Dramatic, impressive, substantial and marked all add heat and no information. Delete them and let the numbers and denominators carry the weight, which they will if you have written them completely.

Evidence craft for stating a translation result

Comparability is the first thing a reader checks. Two numbers can only be compared if they were made by the same rule, from the same source, across periods of similar length and character. If the baseline came from a monthly report and the post-implementation figure from a manual chart audit, say so in the sentence where both appear. A difference in method can be larger than the difference the project produced.

Match the summary statistic to the distribution. Time-to-event data in an acute care setting is usually skewed by a handful of long outliers, which is why medians with an interquartile range often describe it more honestly than means. Say which you used and why in a clause. This is a small sentence that signals real methodological control.

Association language throughout. Was associated with, occurred alongside, coincided with, followed. Reduced, caused, produced and drove all belong to designs that isolated the intervention from everything else happening that quarter, and your design did not. Doctoral readers notice the verb before they notice the number.

Declare missing data rather than absorbing it. If eleven of 104 records lacked a documented recognition time, say so and say how you handled them. Silence about missing data is read as either not having checked or having checked and preferred not to say, and both readings hurt.

Report in units a clinician recognizes. Twenty-eight minutes earlier and 38 more patients extubated within the window mean something on a unit. A relative improvement of 34 percent means considerably less without the base, and percentages that stand alone are the most common way a strong project is made to look evasive.

Five mistakes that cost points in this week's territory

  • Opening with a causal verb. The intervention reduced is a claim the design cannot fund, and it colors every paragraph after it.
  • Percentages without denominators. A 34 percent improvement over an unstated base is decoration, and committees strike it.
  • Skipping process measures. Without delivery and fidelity figures, no reader can judge how much of the outcome your change could plausibly own.
  • Quietly dropping a balancing measure. If it drifted, it belongs on the page; if it did not, it still belongs on the page.
  • Interpreting inside the restatement. Because staff had become more attentive is analysis, and it has its own section three stages from here.

Questions students ask about this stage

Is it repetitive to restate numbers that already appeared in my results section?
It would be if you repeated the whole table, and it is not if you select. A results section reports everything measured; a discussion opens by naming only the figures the argument will use, and it names them completely enough that the reader never has to page backwards. In practice that is one primary measure, one or two process measures, and the balancing measure. Everything else stays in the results. The test is whether a reader who begins at your discussion could follow the entire argument without turning back, because in real life executives and committee members do exactly that. Selection is the skill on display, not economy of words.
My denominator changed partway through the project. How do I write that?
Plainly, in the sentence where the numbers appear, and then again in your data quality note. Denominator changes are ordinary: an eligibility rule is tightened, a second unit joins, a documentation field is added and starts capturing cases that previously went uncounted. What matters is that the reader knows the two periods are not measuring identical populations and can see how large the difference could be. Where you can, recalculate both periods on the narrower definition and report that comparison as the primary one, with the original figures shown beside it. A student who does that has demonstrated more analytic control than one whose numbers happened to be clean, and it is worth saying explicitly what rule the final comparison uses.
Can I use a run chart instead of writing the numbers out?
Use both. A run chart or control chart shows the pattern over time in a way a pair of aggregate figures cannot, including whether the shift began before your intervention started, which is exactly the question your next stage has to answer. But a figure never travels alone into a scholarly document. Write the sentence that states the baseline and post figures with denominators, refer to the chart by number for the pattern, and make sure the chart's axis labels, units and time window match what the sentence says. Also state the rule you used to read the chart, since a visible shift and a statistically meaningful one are different claims and the distinction gets tested in review.
