What NR-703 Week 2 asks for
A cardiac step-down unit changed its handoff from a taped report to a bedside exchange with a structured template. Six months later the template is used at day shift change and skipped at night, and the two shifts have measurably different rates of missed information on transfer. Nothing about the people differs. What differs is that the night handoff happens with fewer staff, a higher patient-to-nurse ratio, and no charge nurse free to cover the floor while the exchange occurs. That is a structural explanation, and it is what this stage of the course wants on the page.
Structure produces behavior through mechanisms, and naming the mechanism is the graded part. Span of control works through attention: a supervisor responsible for more people has less time per person, so coaching, feedback and early intervention all thin out. Shift design works through continuity: fewer, longer shifts change how many handoffs a patient experiences and how much a nurse learns about a trajectory. Handoff architecture works through information transfer: whether the exchange happens where the patient is, whether it is interrupted, whether a template survives a busy night. Decision rights work through delay: every approval step adds latency between a recognized problem and an action.
Written work at this stage typically asks you to analyze a structural feature of your organization with the support of literature, often alongside a discussion post. The register is diagnostic. Weak papers describe the structure and then assert that it causes a problem; strong ones name the mechanism, show the behavior, and produce evidence that the link is plausible.
One more discipline separates doctoral writing here from managerial commentary. Behavior produced by structure is usually rational for the person doing it. A nurse who batches escalations until the end of a medication pass is responding to a real constraint. Write it that way. Analysis that treats structurally produced behavior as a failure of individual diligence has misdiagnosed the system and will produce a recommendation that cannot work.

Behavior that occurs once is an anecdote. Behavior that occurs predictably under specified conditions, such as on nights or during a particular census level, is a finding, and specifying the condition is what makes it credible.

Search for work on the mechanism you named, not on your clinical subject. Research on supervisory span, on continuity, on interruption during information transfer will support your argument far better than another paper about your unit's diagnosis mix.

Evidence craft for structural argument
Search the mechanism, not the setting. Literature on supervisory span, handoff interruption or continuity of caregiver transfers across clinical contexts. Literature limited to your specialty usually does not exist in the volume you need.
Give every ratio its denominator and its window. Patients per nurse on nights across a stated quarter is evidence; understaffed is a judgment. Doctoral graders mark this distinction consistently.
Distinguish designed structure from enacted structure. The staffing grid says one thing and the actual assignment sheet says another. That gap is often where your analysis lives, and naming it is a mark of a writer who has looked rather than assumed.
Use organizational data with its provenance. Name the report and the period. Internal numbers used without a source read as recollection, and recollection is not evidence at this level.
Keep causal verbs proportionate. Constrains, shapes, makes more likely, is associated with. You are arguing that a structure makes a behavior rational and predictable, which is a strong claim that does not require the word causes.
Five mistakes that cost points in this week's territory
- The mechanism left implicit. Naming a structure and a problem without explaining how one produces the other is the most common analysis-row failure in this course.
- Behavior described as negligence. If your account requires staff to be careless, it is not an organizational analysis and the recommendation that follows will be education.
- Three features at once. Breadth is the enemy here. Depth on one link is what the heavy row buys.
- No rival considered. An argument that never meets an objection has not been tested and reads as a position rather than a diagnosis.
- Structure without numbers. Spans, ratios and intervals are countable, and a structural paper without a count is a paper about impressions.
