The short answer

After a matrix is built, the writing that follows in a three-credit block is usually the synthesis, and synthesis has one defining rule: paragraphs are organized by claim rather than by article. Each paragraph states something the evidence supports, cites the studies that support it, names the ones that qualify it, and says what remains unanswered. A section that walks through the matrix study by study has transcribed the table rather than interpreted it, and that is the most common reason a well-sourced submission lands mid-range. What NR-702B Week 4 asks for

How can you tell at a glance whether a synthesis is doing its job? Read the first sentence of each paragraph. If those sentences name authors, the section is a sequence of summaries. If they name claims, the section is an argument. A dialysis clinic writing about interdialytic weight gain and structured counseling should produce topic sentences like: counseling delivered by the treating team during sessions shows more consistent effect than counseling delivered separately, or effects appear within eight to twelve weeks and attenuate without reinforcement. Both sentences make a statement a reader can test against the citations that follow, and both point directly toward a design decision.

The second demand is that disagreement be explained rather than averaged. Bodies of evidence in practice change are rarely unanimous, and the differences usually have methodological reasons: a lighter dose of the intervention, a population with a different baseline, a shorter follow-up, an outcome measured by the person delivering the care. Writing that says findings were mixed and stops has given the reader nothing. Writing that says the two null studies both delivered the intervention at half the frequency of the positive ones has told the reader something that changes the plan.

Third, a doctoral synthesis has to end where a research review would not: with a statement of what this means for one specific site. Translation writing carries the argument through to a decision. That paragraph is not a summary of the section; it is the bridge into intervention selection, and the extra hours in a three-credit block are well spent making it precise, because everything from week five onward is built on it.

The boundary that governs every page in this manual. Practicum hours, hour logs, encounter counts, site documentation, preceptor evaluations and signatures are the student's own record and are never drafted, reconstructed or estimated with help from anyone. No tutor performs, observes or documents clinical activity on a student's behalf. Support belongs to the written layer only: organizing an argument, testing whether claims are carried by the citations attached to them, and holding doctoral register. Any real encounter appearing in your writing must be de-identified, with roles described rather than individuals and the site named only by type and size.

The NR-702B Week 4 method, step by step

Seven moves for turning a completed matrix into an argument.

  1. Read down the columns and write every pattern as a sentence

    Not notes, sentences. Effects cluster in settings with dedicated staffing; the two strongest designs used the same outcome instrument; no study included a population resembling ours. Each of those becomes a candidate claim.

  2. Sort the candidate claims into a sequence

    Usually: the intervention family works, this is the mechanism, these conditions strengthen or weaken it, this is how it has been delivered, here is what nobody has answered. That order builds toward a decision instead of circling.

  3. Attach the supporting studies to each claim

    Work from the matrix rather than from memory. A claim carried by one weak source is not yet a claim; either find the support, soften the statement, or move it into the unanswered category where it belongs.

  4. Add the qualifier in the same paragraph

    Every claim has a study that complicates it. Put the complication next to the claim rather than in a separate limitations section, because proximity is what makes the paragraph read as judgment rather than as advocacy.

  5. Explain each disagreement methodologically

    Look for dose, population, follow-up length, measurement source or power before concluding that the literature is simply inconsistent. Most apparent contradictions dissolve into a difference somebody did not control.

  6. Write the gap paragraph as a service to your project

    What the evidence does not answer for a setting like yours is not a weakness of your review; it is the space your project occupies. State it precisely enough that a reader sees why the project is worth doing.

  7. Close with the translation statement

    One paragraph saying what the body of evidence supports doing, in a setting with your constraints, and which elements will need adaptation. That paragraph is the spine of everything you write from the next stage onward.

Evidence craft for synthesis writing

Cluster citations behind claims. Three sources supporting one statement should appear together in a single sentence, which demonstrates convergence. A paragraph containing three sentences each citing one study demonstrates that you read three studies, which is a much weaker thing to demonstrate at doctoral level.

Report ranges rather than single numbers. Effects across five studies ran from four to nineteen percentage points, with the largest in settings using a dedicated role, tells a reader more than any individual result and shows that the set was read as a body rather than as a queue.

Keep causal language tethered to design. Where your claim rests on observational work, the verb is associated. Where it rests on controlled comparison, stronger verbs are earned. Doctoral readers check this alignment closely because it is the clearest signal of whether a student read methods or conclusions.

Separate what the evidence says from what you infer. Inference is legitimate and necessary in translation writing, but it must be visible. Signal it: the studies do not address settings without pharmacist support, so the assumption that a nurse-delivered version performs similarly is mine and carries risk.

Cite guidelines as normative statements, not as evidence of effect. A professional body's recommendation tells you what a field believes should happen and often summarizes evidence you should read directly. Use it to establish the standard, use the primary sources to establish the effect, and keep the two roles distinct in your prose.

Five mistakes that cost points in this week's territory

  • Paragraphs that begin with author names. The surest sign that a matrix was transcribed rather than synthesized, and it is visible from the first sentence of every paragraph.
  • Findings were mixed, with no explanation. Disagreement is the most informative part of an evidence set, and leaving it unexplained wastes the section's strongest material.
  • Claims carried by one weak source. A statement supported by a single small report should be softened or moved to the gaps paragraph rather than presented as established.
  • Invisible inference. Reasoning beyond what the studies show is necessary, but presenting it as though the literature said it is the kind of overreach committees find first.
  • A synthesis with no translation paragraph. Ending at what the literature shows leaves the doctoral half of the task undone and strands the next stage without a starting point.

Questions students ask about this stage

How do I write a synthesis when every study measured something different?
Synthesize at the level of direction and mechanism rather than at the level of the number. When outcome instruments differ, you cannot pool results, but you can still say that six of eight studies found improvement in the same direction, that the two that did not shared a specific feature, and that the measures used fall into two families capturing related but distinct things. Then state which family your site can actually measure, because that decision is coming in a later stage and this is where it is best justified. Heterogeneous measurement is extremely common in nursing intervention literature and it is not a flaw in your review. What is a flaw is forcing incomparable numbers into a single sentence as if they were equivalent, which a careful reader will unpick immediately.
How long should a synthesis be if my rubric does not say?
Long enough to carry the claims and no longer, which in a three-credit practicum block usually lands somewhere between fifteen hundred and two thousand words for the synthesis proper. A more useful way to size it is by claims rather than by words: five to seven substantive claims, each with a paragraph containing support, qualification and consequence, produces a section of roughly the right weight. If you find yourself writing a twelfth claim, some of them are probably restatements of one another and should be merged. If you have only two, the matrix was thin or the reading down the columns has not happened yet. Where your rubric does state a length, that number governs, and the way to fit it is to cut description rather than judgment.
Can writing help produce the synthesis from my matrix?
The judgments have to be yours, because they are the intellectual substance of the doctoral project and you will be asked to defend them without notes. Where support is genuinely useful is in the architecture: identifying which of your observations are claims and which are still descriptions, sequencing them so the argument builds, checking that each claim is actually carried by the sources you attached to it, catching causal verbs that outrun their designs, and lifting the prose to doctoral register. That is editorial work on your reasoning rather than a substitute for it. As always, nothing touching your hours, logs, site paperwork or preceptor documentation can be assisted at all, since those are verified records.
What if my synthesis points away from the intervention my site prefers?
Write what the evidence shows and treat the divergence as a finding worth handling carefully rather than as a crisis. It happens regularly: a department has already decided on an approach, and the literature turns out to support a different or narrower version. Sometimes the difference is smaller than it first appears, because the preferred approach contains the supported component alongside others that carry no evidence, and the honest recommendation is to implement the supported part first. Sometimes the divergence is real, in which case your synthesis should state it plainly and your later sections should present the evidence-supported option as the primary plan with the site's preference discussed. Handling this well is a leadership skill as much as a scholarly one, and committees notice when a student navigates it without either capitulating or picking a fight.
