The short answer

By the middle of the session the project needs a teaching design and, more importantly, a defence of it. The graded quality is comparative justification: why this strategy rather than the two you rejected, given these learners, this gap, this evidence and this amount of time. A lesson plan without a defence answers half the question, and it is usually the half the scoring rows weight least. Your section may print this as NR 621 or NR621; it is the same course. What NR-621 Week 5 asks for

A department reviewing a proposed education session will ask three questions in order: what will learners do during this hour, why that rather than something else, and how will we know it worked. The second question is the one student projects most often skip, and it is the one that separates a nurse educator from a person who has organized a class. The design stage of an educator practicum asks you to answer all three in writing, with the middle one carrying most of the weight.

The design itself has a recognizable anatomy. Every teaching session moves through some version of the same sequence: gaining attention and establishing relevance, activating what learners already know, presenting new content, providing guided practice, providing independent practice with feedback, and checking achievement. What varies is the proportion of time given to each, and that proportion is the real design decision. A confidence gap needs most of the hour in practice with feedback. A knowledge gap can carry more presentation. A session that gives fifty minutes to presentation and five to practice has made a decision, usually without noticing.

The defence is a comparison, and it has to be honest about the rejected options. If you chose simulation over case discussion, say what case discussion would have offered, what it would have cost less, and what specifically about your gap made the more expensive option worth it. If you chose a short didactic segment despite a preference in the literature for active methods, say why: possibly because the learners genuinely lack the underlying knowledge that active methods assume. Reviewers reward the writer who can argue against their own choice and then answer the argument.

The fourth element is feasibility, and it is where designs meet the practicum's real constraints. How long do you actually have with these learners, how many are there, what space and equipment exist, who else is needed, and what happens if half the group is pulled to the floor. A design that requires two facilitators in a department that can spare one is not a design, and a paragraph acknowledging the constraint and adapting to it demonstrates exactly the practical judgment the educator role requires.

Six moves that turn a session outline into a defended design.

  1. Allocate the minutes before you write any content

    Split your available time across the phases of the session and look at the split. If practice with feedback is under a third of a session aimed at a skill or confidence gap, the design is wrong regardless of how good the content is.

  2. Map each objective to the activity that will get learners there

    One column of objectives, one column of activities. Objectives with no activity are aspirations, and activities serving no objective are content you enjoy teaching. Both show up immediately in a two-column check.

  3. Name two alternatives and price them

    What each would have cost in time, facilitators, equipment and learner effort, and what each would have offered. A defence without alternatives is an assertion, and this comparison is what the justification row is looking for.

  4. Trace each design choice back to a specific proposition

    Practice in pairs before individual performance because of the mechanism your chosen theory describes; spaced repetition of the critical step because of what your literature reported. One clause per choice is enough.

  5. Write the feasibility check against your actual setting

    Time available, group size, space, equipment, second facilitator, and the interruption risk in your environment. Then adapt the design to the answer rather than describing an ideal session you cannot run.

  6. Plan the feedback mechanism explicitly

    Who gives feedback, when in the session, on what criteria, and how a learner who does not meet the standard is handled in the moment. Feedback design is where sessions succeed or fail, and it is frequently left implicit.

Evidence craft for design justification

Cite for the choice, not for the content. The citations that matter in this section support your instructional decision: evidence that this method suits this kind of gap in this kind of learner. Sources establishing that the clinical topic is important belong further back in the paper and add nothing here.

Quantify the design where quantification is possible. Twelve minutes of guided practice and eighteen of independent practice with feedback is a design a reader can evaluate. Ample opportunity for practice is a phrase that could describe any allocation, including a poor one.

Be specific about group size effects. A method that works with six learners may be unmanageable with twenty-four, and the literature you cite frequently ran at a size you should name. Stating the group size in the study and in your setting is a small precision that carries real weight in an education course.

Write the mentor's input as input, not as authority. If your mentor recommended an approach, say so and then give the reasons that make it right rather than resting on their recommendation. Deferring to expertise without argument is the one form of unsupported claim that students most often think is safe.

Five mistakes that cost points in this week's territory

  • A lesson plan with no defence. Describing what will happen answers the first question and skips the one carrying the weight.
  • Activities that serve no objective. Content included because it is interesting is the most common source of time pressure in a session that then cannot finish its practice.
  • Rejected options named but not priced. Saying you considered case study without saying what it would have offered or cost is not a comparison.
  • Theory left behind in the previous section. A grounding section that never reappears in the design confirms that it was decoration.
  • A design that ignores the real setting. Two facilitators, ninety minutes and a simulation lab, proposed in a department that has none of the three, is a plan for somewhere else.

Questions students ask about this stage

I only have thirty minutes with these learners. Is that enough for a project?
It is enough, provided the design is honest about it. Thirty minutes cannot close a broad gap, and a project claiming it will is asking a grader not to do arithmetic. What thirty minutes can do is take a narrow, well-specified behavior and move learners from unable to able under defined conditions, with practice and feedback compressed but present. Write the constraint into the design as a governing decision: because the available time is thirty minutes, presentation is limited to eight, guided practice takes ten, independent practice with feedback takes ten, and the check takes two. Then narrow the objectives so the arithmetic works. Sessions that fail in short slots almost always fail because the objectives were written for an hour and the time was not.
My mentor wants the session done a different way. Whose approach do I write up?
Write up what will actually happen, and use the disagreement as content rather than hiding it. If the session runs the mentor's way, describe that design and then include a short paragraph analyzing the alternative you had proposed, what the evidence suggested about it, and what you would want to test if given the choice. That paragraph shows independent reasoning while respecting the reality that you are a guest in someone else's teaching environment. If you cannot reconcile the two, the person to consult is your faculty member, since they own the grading standard and can tell you whether the submission can describe a proposed design that differs from the delivered one. What you should not do is submit a design nobody ran, because the reflective writing later in the session will not match it.
How do I justify a lecture segment when the literature favours active learning?
By arguing from your learners rather than from convenience. Active methods generally assume a base of knowledge that learners can then apply, and a group that genuinely lacks that base will flounder in a discussion or a scenario without a short structured input first. If that is your situation, say so, point at the needs assessment evidence that establishes it, keep the didactic segment tightly bounded in minutes, and show that the majority of the time still goes to application. Written that way, the lecture segment is a defended design decision rather than a default. Written without the argument, it reads as the path of least resistance, and in a course whose whole purpose is teaching you to design instruction deliberately, that is the impression to avoid.
