What NR-585NP Week 1 asks for
Three ideas get confused in an opening week and the confusion is expensive later. Research produces new knowledge and needs approval before anyone acts on it with patients. Evidence-based practice takes knowledge that already exists, appraises it, and applies it to a decision in front of you. Improvement work tests a change against a local target in a local system. Your week's rubric will lean on one of the three, and a draft answering the wrong one loses points that polish cannot recover.
The second job is a problem statement with edges. A topic is diabetes. A problem is that adults with type 2 diabetes leaving one clinic have no documented follow-up inside 90 days, and the fraction can be counted. Graduate readers see the difference on the first page. Say who is affected, in what setting, how often it happens, and what it costs the patient when it does.
At the front of an 8-week session the deliverable shapes stay modest: a short scholarly paper of roughly 1,000 to 1,200 words, an introductory thread, or the two together. If your section runs a discussion this week, draft the post in a document first, because a Canvas board cannot be edited once the post is live and a first-week thread often fixes the topic you carry to the end.

Read the rubric before you fall for a topic
Open your week's rubric in Canvas and write each row on a line of its own. The rows tell you whether the week wants a problem described, a question built, or both, and they set the length. Choosing the topic first is how strong writing ends up in the wrong place.

Choose a problem you have actually watched
Pick something from your own practice with a visible consequence: a delay, an omission, a readmission, a step people skip when the unit is short-staffed. Familiarity buys specificity, and specificity is what the early scoring rows pay for.

Sort it into research, practice change or improvement
Ask what would settle it. Knowledge nobody has yet means research. Existing evidence applied to a decision means evidence-based practice. A local process failing a local target means improvement. Name your answer in the draft instead of leaving a grader to infer it.

Write the five elements on five separate lines
Population, intervention, comparison, outcome, timeframe, each on its own line before any prose exists. An element you cannot write plainly is the element missing from your thinking, and the missing one is almost always the comparison or the timeframe.

Run a five minute search before you commit
Paste the population and the intervention into CINAHL or PubMed and look at the count. Zero results means the question is too narrow or the words are wrong. Thousands of results with nothing on point usually means the outcome is not measurable as you have written it.

Write the significance paragraph last
With the question fixed, go find the numbers proving the problem matters: prevalence, cost, complication rate, whatever your setting reports. Significance written first tends to be decoration. Significance written last is aimed at the question you actually asked.

Sourcing a problem statement
National data for scope, local data for relevance. A federal or professional-body figure proves the problem exists at scale. Your own setting's numbers, even rough ones, prove it exists where you work. A paper carrying only one of the two has made half an argument.
Give the year the data was collected. Publication year and collection year are different facts, and health statistics often lag two or three years behind the article reporting them. Naming the collection year is one short clause that tells a graduate reader you understand your source.
Cite the study, not the paper that mentions it. If a review quotes a trial result you want, retrieve the trial. Second-hand citation is where numbers mutate, and the appraisal weeks ahead in this session are built to expose it.
Size the verb to the design. Descriptive and survey work supports occurs in, was reported by, was associated with. Reduces and prevents belong to controlled designs. Week one is where the habit of oversized verbs either starts or does not.
Respect the currency window. Follow whatever range your week's rubric names. Older material is defensible when it is the origin of a model or the only measurement in existence, and only when your sentence says which of the two it is.
Keep the search reproducible from the first day. Write down the database, the terms, the limits and the date you searched. The next week will ask you to defend that search, and rebuilding it from memory costs an evening you will want back.
Five things that cost points in a first-week problem paper
- A topic standing where a problem should be. Hypertension is a subject area. Patients discharged with no blood pressure follow-up booked is a problem, and only the second can be counted or fixed.
- An intervention hiding inside the population. Writing adults on a nurse-led protocol into the population element assumes the answer. The intervention belongs in its own element, and blending the two makes the comparison impossible to state.
- A question missing its comparison or its timeframe. These are the two elements students go quiet on, and both are visible at a glance because the sentence simply stops early.
- Significance with no source attached. A sentence saying the problem is widespread carries no weight at graduate level. Attach the number, the population it came from, and where it was published.
- Leaving the research and practice distinction implied. If the rubric separates research from evidence-based practice, say in your own words which one your question sits in. An implied answer scores the same as a missing one.
