The short answer

Bedside shift report is the classic example of an intervention whose published record is far more interesting than its reputation: the results vary widely, and most of the variation comes from how faithfully it was implemented rather than from whether it works. NR-560 Week 3 asks you to defend your chosen change from that kind of literature, organized by finding rather than by author, and to say honestly how strong the case is. What NR-560 Week 3 asks for

The territory is a focused review with a job to do. Unlike a review written for a research course, this one exists to answer three questions for a decision-maker. Does this intervention address the cause you identified? What size of effect does the evidence support in settings like yours? And what does the literature say about making it actually happen, which is the part that decides whether your project succeeds or quietly stops in month two.

That third question is the one capstone students skip, and it is often where the most useful material lives. Implementation detail in published reports tells you what training was required, what the workflow change actually involved, how long adoption took and what caused it to decay. That is the raw material of your implementation plan two stages from now, and reading for it while you have the articles open saves an entire evening later.

Organization is scored more heavily here than at any earlier point. A review organized study by study is an annotated bibliography no matter how well written each paragraph is, and it fails the synthesis rows in every capstone rubric we have seen. A review organized by finding, where each section makes a claim and several studies support it, is the shape that scores. The difference is visible from the section headings alone.

The other requirement is honesty about strength. Capstone writers have already chosen their intervention by this stage and the temptation is to present the evidence as a united front. Faculty read a large number of these documents and a review with no dissenting study is a review that was filtered. Reporting the study that found nothing, and explaining why, makes the whole document more credible rather than less.

The NR-560 Week 3 method, step by step

Six moves that produce a review a decision-maker could act on.

  1. Search against your identified cause, not your topic

    You are looking for evidence that this mechanism responds to this kind of intervention. Searching for the topic returns everything ever written about the problem; searching for the mechanism returns the studies that bear on your decision. Record the databases, strings and limits so the review is reproducible.

  2. Extract implementation detail alongside effect

    For each study, capture what was actually done, by whom, with what preparation and over what period, in addition to what happened. Two studies of nominally the same intervention often describe very different amounts of work, and that difference usually explains their different results.

  3. Build sections from findings and name them that way

    Effectiveness for this outcome, what makes it work, what makes it fail, and how long the effect lasts. Each becomes a heading, and each heading is a claim your paragraph then supports with multiple studies.

  4. Report the effect in units your organization would recognize

    Events per hundred admissions, minutes per shift, percentage point change in a documented rate. Carry the size of the effect forward, because the target in your aim statement next stage has to be defensible and the literature is where its defence comes from.

  5. Judge the strength of the whole set in one paragraph

    How many studies, what designs, how consistent, how similar the settings are to yours. Then say how much confidence the set supports. This paragraph is what turns a review into a recommendation, and most student drafts leave it out entirely.

  6. Close the loop back to your setting

    Applicability is its own judgment, separate from quality. Say what about your unit makes the evidence more or less likely to transfer: skill mix, patient acuity, the record system, the physical layout. A strong study conducted where a role exists that you do not have is a transfer problem worth naming.

Evidence craft for a capstone review

No paragraph rests on a single study. Where only one study addresses a claim, say so explicitly and treat the thinness as part of the finding rather than hiding it behind confident phrasing.

Match verbs to designs. Reduced belongs where something was assigned and compared. Was associated with belongs where it was observed. Improvement reports describe what happened in one place and support was followed by rather than caused. In a document that will be read as a recommendation, this precision matters more than usual.

Use improvement reports for feasibility and trials for effect. Single-site reports carry exactly the implementation detail your plan needs and cannot establish causation. Saying which job each source is doing is a mark of a sophisticated review.

Give guidelines their issuing body and year. Where a professional organization recommends the practice you are proposing, that is strong support for a capstone and it must be attributed and dated inside the sentence rather than left to the reference list.

Report the null result. A study that found nothing is evidence, and explaining why it may have differed from the others, usually through dose, duration, population or fidelity, is one of the most valuable paragraphs you can write in this stage.

Five mistakes that cost points in this week's territory

  • Study-by-study organization. The clearest signal that synthesis did not happen, and it is visible before a grader reads a word of the body.
  • A review that surveys the topic. A capstone review answers a decision, and everything not bearing on that decision is length without value.
  • Only supportive evidence. A united front reads as filtering, and faculty who know the literature will name the study you omitted.
  • Effects reported as improved. Without size in real units, the aim you write next stage has no defensible target.
  • Implementation detail discarded. Reading only for results throws away the material your implementation plan will need in two stages.

  • Section headings state findings rather than author names
  • Every claim is supported by more than one study, or its singularity is stated
  • Effects appear in units the organization would recognize
  • At least one study reporting no effect is included and explained
  • Implementation conditions are extracted, not just outcomes
  • A single paragraph states how strong the whole body of evidence is
  • Applicability to your setting is judged separately from study quality

Questions students ask about this stage

How many sources does a capstone review need?
Follow your assignment where it names a number, and where it does not, let the structure decide. If your review has four thematic sections and each needs more than one study to support its claim, the arithmetic sets a floor of roughly eight to twelve primary sources plus whatever synthesized evidence and guidelines you use for context. Beyond that, additional sources start to cost more than they add, because each one is something a grader can check and each weak one dilutes the set. What matters far more than the count is that every source is doing identifiable work. A reader should be able to ask why a particular study is in the document and find the answer in the sentence around it. Padding is easy to detect in a capstone because padded citations cluster in the introduction, where they support general statements that nobody disputes, and disappear from the sections where the argument actually needs support.
The evidence for my intervention is thinner than I hoped. What now?
You have three legitimate options and only one bad one. You can keep the intervention and scale the proposal to the evidence, proposing a small monitored trial rather than a permanent unit-wide change, which is often the strongest available move and shows genuine judgment. You can switch to an intervention with a better evidence base that addresses the same cause, which is worth doing now while it costs you one stage rather than in week 6 when it costs you the project. Or you can reframe the aim around a process outcome that the evidence does support, since many interventions have solid evidence for changing behaviour and weaker evidence for changing distal clinical outcomes. The bad option is to present thin evidence as strong, because the strength-of-evidence paragraph is precisely where faculty look, and an overclaim there contaminates every downstream section of the capstone.
Can I include a study conducted somewhere very different from my setting?
Yes, and doing it well is a point of sophistication rather than a compromise. Include it, report it accurately, and then handle the distance explicitly in the applicability section instead of leaving the reader to notice the gap themselves. Be specific about what differs and whether that difference touches the mechanism you care about. If the intervention worked in a system with a staffing ratio you will never have, the effect size probably does not transfer but the direction and the implementation lessons may. If it worked in an outpatient clinic and you are proposing it on an inpatient unit, ask whether the mechanism depends on continuity of relationship, because that is the feature most likely to be lost in translation. Writing three sentences of that kind of reasoning is worth more to your grade than adding two more studies from the perfect setting, which in most capstone topics do not exist anyway.
