A framework in population health is a machine for organizing causes and pointing at actions. The families matter more than the brand names: one family arranges influences in nested layers, from the individual through relationships and community out to policy, and suits problems whose causes stack across levels. The second is the mapping.   4. Cite the model to its origin, with a year

    Name the formulation you are using and where it comes from, because most frameworks exist in several versions and the differences matter. An uncited model is folklore, and a mis-versioned one misleads the mapping that follows.

  5. Map every element, visibly

    Walk your analysis into the model's structure piece by piece: this determinant sits at this level, this barrier is this dimension, this existing program acts at this stage. The mapping paragraph is the assignment's core, and a table often serves it well.

  6. Let the model select the level, then critique the model

    State where the framework says action belongs and why that level over the crowded ones. Then one honest paragraph on what the model missed. The critique does not weaken the paper; it is the top band's signature.

Evidence and citation craft for framework writing

Frameworks have origins, versions and years. The layered-influence family alone spans several published formulations with different level counts and labels. Cite the version you are using in the sentence, because a mapping built on mixed versions produces levels that belong to no actual model.

A framework is a lens, not evidence. Placing a determinant at the policy level does not prove policy action works; that claim still needs outcome literature with designs and samples stated. Papers that let the model substitute for evidence have confused organizing with supporting, and the grading separates them.

Keep the model's vocabulary exact. If the framework calls a dimension availability, use that word, not a paraphrase, and keep your own analytic terms from drifting into the model's slots. Precision here is cheap and visible, and graders in framework territory read for it.

Anchor the crowded-and-empty claim. Saying most existing effort targets the individual level is a checkable claim about real programs. Name two or three actual programs and where they act, with sources, and the claim becomes evidence; leave them out and it is an impression.

  • Framework as garnish. Cited once, described briefly, never used again: the single most common shape in this territory, and the one every rubric is built to catch.

  • Two frameworks, both half-used. Splitting the space between models usually means neither one runs. One model, fully applied, with the road not taken named in a sentence.
  • Treating the model as proof. The framework organizes; the literature supports. A paper that lets the diagram carry the causal weight has inverted their jobs.

My course materials do not name a specific framework. Which one do I use?
Read your week's rubric first, because a named expectation sometimes hides in the criterion language even when the readings stay general. If the choice is genuinely open, choose by diagnosis: write your one-sentence problem statement, then ask what kind of question it poses. Causes stacked from household to policy point to a layered-influence model. People not reaching services point to an access-dimensions model. A question about acting before onset versus after establishment points to a prevention-stage model. Any of the standard families can earn full credit when the fit argument is explicit, and none of them can when it is missing, which makes the reasoning, not the brand, the actual answer.
Can I modify a framework if my problem does not quite fit?
Adapt at the edges, and declare every adaptation. Adding a locally relevant example to a level, or noting that two dimensions overlap for your population, is normal applied work when you say that is what you are doing and keep the original citation visible. Redrawing the model until it agrees with the paper you already wrote is the failure mode: the framework exists to pressure your analysis, and a model bent to fit can no longer do that. A practical test: if your adapted version would still be recognizable to the framework's author, and you have said in one sentence what you changed and why, you are adapting; past that line you are inventing, and inventions need more defense than a foundations paper can afford.
What if my mapping leaves parts of the framework empty?
Report the empty slots as findings rather than filling them with padding. A model with unpopulated levels is telling you something: either your analysis has a gap worth naming, no evidence at the community level was found, which is itself informative, or the problem genuinely does not operate at that level, which sharpens your fit argument. Both readings make honest, gradable sentences. What costs marks is the third response, inventing thin material so every slot looks occupied, because forced placements are easy to spot and they dilute the mapping's real content. State what is empty, say which reading you take and why, and move to the level where the action is.
