NR-516 Week 3 Quantitative Research Designs: How to Write It

The short answer

NR-516 Week 3 is where the word study stops being acceptable. The middle of a research session turns to quantitative design, and the graded move is naming what a study actually did and then saying what that structure can and cannot support. A randomized trial, a cohort, a case control and a cross sectional survey answer different questions with different confidence, and telling them apart in writing is the technical core of the course. What NR-516 Week 3 asks for

The territory here is the family tree of quantitative work. Experimental designs, where the researcher assigns the exposure and does so at random. Quasi experimental designs, where the researcher assigns but not randomly, or compares before with after. Observational designs, where the researcher watches what people were going to do anyway, split into cohorts followed forward, case control studies that look backwards from an outcome, and cross sectional snapshots that capture everything at once. Alongside them sit the evidence hierarchies that rank these arrangements, and the reason the ranking exists at all, which is control over confounding.

The reasoning the course wants is conditional rather than absolute. A randomized trial is not automatically the best evidence for your question; it is the best evidence for a question about whether an intervention causes a change, and it is often unavailable, unethical or irrelevant for questions about prognosis, prevalence or harm from rare exposures. Writing that shows you can match design to question outscores writing that recites a pyramid.

Deliverables at this stage often ask you to take one or more retrieved articles and identify the design with justification, sometimes in a table, sometimes in prose, sometimes both. The identification is the easy half. The half that carries the points is the sentence after it, where you say what the chosen design lets the authors claim. The NR-516 Week 3 method, step by step

Six questions asked in order will name almost any quantitative design in nursing literature, and each answer becomes a sentence in the draft.

  1. Ask who decided who got what

    If the researcher assigned the exposure, the study is experimental or quasi experimental. If people arrived already exposed or unexposed, it is observational. This single question splits the whole field and belongs in your first sentence about any article.

  2. Ask whether assignment was random

    Random assignment is what balances the characteristics nobody measured, which is the entire reason trials sit high on the hierarchy. A study that assigns by ward, by month or by who volunteered has assigned without randomising, and that difference decides which confounders remain in play.

  3. Ask which direction time runs

    Forward from exposure to outcome is a cohort. Backward from outcome to exposure is a case control. Everything measured at once is cross sectional and can show association but not sequence. Naming the direction protects you from the most common overclaim in the course.

  4. Ask what the comparison group is and where it came from

    A control arm, a matched sample, a historical baseline, another ward, or nothing at all. The origin of the comparison decides how much of the observed difference could have been there before the intervention arrived, and a single group before and after design has to defend itself on exactly this point.

  5. Ask what the design cannot rule out

    For each structure, name the threat it leaves open: selection into groups, recall of past exposure, secular trends over the study window, differential loss to follow up. Writing the specific threat rather than the general word bias is what a scoring row about strengths and limitations is actually asking for.

  6. Convert the design into a permitted verb

    Finish each appraisal with the claim the design supports. Reduced and caused belong to controlled experimental work. Was associated with, occurred more often among and predicted belong to observational work. Choosing the verb deliberately is the cheapest point you will earn all session.

Evidence craft when design is the subject

Get the label from the methods, not the title. Titles are written to be attractive and abstracts compress. Authors sometimes call a two group comparison a trial when nothing was randomised. Read the participants and procedures paragraphs, then apply your own label and say why.

Cite methodological sources when you define a design. Definitions of cohort and case control come from research methods literature, not from the article you are appraising. Those sources age slowly, so an older text is defensible here provided the sentence says it is being used for a definition.

Carry the design into every finding sentence. Nine words of provenance change the status of a claim: in a retrospective cohort of 1,840 admissions at two hospitals. Without them, a finding is an assertion wearing a citation.

Do not appraise a review as though it were a study. A systematic review has a design of its own, made of search, screening and synthesis decisions. If your week's rubric wants a primary study, use the review to find one and appraise what it points to.

Five mistakes that cost points in this week's territory

  • Calling everything a study. The generic noun is the single clearest signal that a writer cannot yet distinguish arrangements, and it is visible in the first line.
  • Treating random sampling as random assignment. One concerns who was invited into the study, the other concerns who received the intervention. They protect against different problems and are not interchangeable.
  • Ranking by hierarchy alone. Declaring a trial superior without asking whether a trial could answer your question misses the conditional reasoning the stage is built on.
  • Limitations written generically. Small sample size and further research is needed apply to everything and therefore say nothing. Name the threat this design leaves open in this population.
  • Causal verbs on observational findings. One misplaced caused can cost a row on its own, and this is the stage where a grader is most alert to it.

  • Each article carries a design label with evidence from the methods section behind it
  • Assignment, randomisation and comparison group are stated separately
  • The direction of time through the study is explicit
  • At least one named threat to validity appears for each design discussed
  • Every finding sentence uses a verb the design can pay for
  • Every reference appears in the text and every in-text citation appears in the list

Questions students ask about this stage

The article never says what design it used. What do I write?
Say that, then build the label yourself from the evidence in the methods and show your working. Write that participants arrived with the exposure already determined, that outcomes were collected forward over eighteen months, and that no allocation occurred, and then name it a prospective cohort. Reasoning to a label in the open is stronger than repeating one the authors supplied, and it protects you if a grader disagrees with the final answer, because the criteria you used are visible on the page.
Is a quality improvement project usable as evidence?
It is usable and it needs labelling honestly. Most improvement reports are single site, single group, before and after designs with concurrent changes running alongside the intervention, which means the result is suggestive rather than confirmatory. Treat it as evidence about feasibility and local effect, say plainly what it cannot rule out, and avoid stacking several such reports as though the total added up to a trial. Faculty are generally pleased to see improvement work cited well, and unimpressed when it is dressed as something stronger.
Do I need to criticise the design even when it is a good one?
You need to state what it leaves open, which is not the same as criticism. Even a well conducted randomized trial has boundaries: it randomised at one type of site, it followed patients for a limited window, it measured an outcome by one instrument, it excluded a group you care about. Naming those is descriptive work, not fault finding, and it is exactly what a strengths and limitations row rewards. A paragraph that finds nothing to say about a strong study usually means the methods section was skimmed.
