Open any environmental health file that a health department actually acts on and the first thing you find is not toxicology. It is provenance: an inspection record with a date, a sampling location described well enough that someone could stand on it again, a laboratory report with a method and a detection limit printed at the bottom, and a note about who collected the sample and how it was preserved on the way to the bench. That documentation trail is the discipline in miniature, and an opening stage in this course is built to install the habit of writing with it rather than around it.
The territory of Week 1 is the conceptual model that organizes the whole field. Something releases an agent. The agent moves through a medium, changes on the way, and arrives somewhere. People meet it there at some concentration, for some length of time, at some frequency. A dose accumulates in a body that may be more or less able to handle it, and an effect follows or does not. Every one of those links is a separate empirical claim, and each one is a place a paper can be thin. The written deliverable at this stage typically asks you to walk that chain once, carefully, with a hazard you can document.
What separates this from a general health paper is the requirement that the analysis have units and boundaries. A public health practitioner writing about a contaminated well does not write that residents are exposed to unsafe levels. That practitioner writes that eleven of the forty-one sampled private wells in a defined service area returned nitrate above a stated health-based value, using a stated analytical method, over a stated sampling window, and that roughly so many households draw drinking water from those wells. The first sentence is a worry. The second is an assessment, and only the second can be argued with, checked, or acted on.
Early stages in an eight-week session tend to carry a modest written piece and often a posted response. Treat the post as final copy. Point to a permit, an inspection report, a facility registry entry, a monitoring station, a land-use record or a published survey. Say what it is, who maintains it, and what date it carries. A source described from memory is the single most common weak link in an opening submission.

Persistence, solubility, volatility, particle size and whether the agent concentrates in tissue all decide where it goes and who meets it. Write the physical behavior first, then the route. A pathway asserted without the properties that make it plausible is a guess dressed as a finding.

Children, pregnant people, outdoor workers, residents nearest the source and people already carrying disease do not share an exposure or a susceptibility. Name the subgroups you will carry through the paper here, and the rest of the analysis becomes specific rather than average.

State which figures were measured, which were modeled and which were assumed, and say which direction the estimate would move if an assumption failed. Uncertainty written into the analysis reads as competence; uncertainty omitted reads as overreach, and in this course it is a scored distinction.

Evidence craft when the record is the argument
Cite the record, not the impression of the record. Monitoring data, inspection reports, facility registries and survey files are all published by identifiable bodies on identifiable schedules. Name the system, the agency that maintains it and the year of the extract inside your sentence. A reader who cannot tell where a number came from cannot weigh it, and in an opening piece the provenance is often what the row is scoring.
Every number arrives with a unit and an averaging period. Micrograms per cubic meter of air and parts per billion in water are not interchangeable currencies, and a concentration averaged over one hour answers a different question from the same pollutant averaged over a year. When you compare a measured value against a guidance value, put both into the same unit and the same window before the comparison appears on the page.
Say which body issues the value you are measuring against. Enforceable limits, health-based guidance values and screening levels come from different institutions and carry different legal weight. Treating an advisory number as a legal ceiling is a substantive error at this level, so name the issuing body and the type of value in the same clause where the number appears.
Keep detection limits and non-detects visible. A laboratory result reported as below the detection limit is not the same as zero, and a screening program that never looked for an agent is not evidence of its absence. Where your data set has gaps of either kind, write one sentence explaining what the gap allows and what it forbids you to claim. That sentence is cheap and it protects every conclusion after it.
Five mistakes that cost points in this week's territory
- The substance essay. Twelve hundred words about a chemical's toxicity with no place, no population and no pathway answers a question the scoring guide did not ask.
- Hazard treated as risk. Something being dangerous says nothing about whether anyone is meeting enough of it. Risk requires a pathway and a dose, and the word should not appear before both are on the page.
- A national statistic used as a local finding. Country-level prevalence establishes that a problem exists somewhere. Your boundary statement promised a place, and the analysis has to stay inside it.
- The uniform community. Writing about residents as one undifferentiated group discards the part of the analysis that makes it public health rather than chemistry.
- Recommendations before the chain is intact. A control proposed while the pathway is still unspecified lands on nothing, and graders read backward from recommendations to check that they attach.
