Turn the scoring rows into a word budget
Read the rubric before the prompt, because in this course the prompt usually names an organism and the rubric names five separate things you have to do with it. Copy the rows into a blank page, one per line, and write the single sentence that would satisfy each. Any row where that sentence will not come is the row to ask your instructor about early in the week rather than guess at on the last night.

Evidence and naming craft in microbiology
Five conventions carry more marks in this course than most students expect, and none of them requires extra reading.
Write organism names the way the discipline does. Genus capitalized, species lowercase, both italicized, and the genus abbreviated to its initial after the first full use in a document. This is a formatting rule with a knowledge test hidden inside it, since abbreviating correctly proves you know which word is the genus.
Name the target, not just the drug. A treatment sentence earns its row when it says what the agent interferes with, such as a wall, a membrane, a ribosome or a nucleic acid step. Add why that target spares human cells and you have answered a follow-up before it is asked.
Keep colonization and infection apart. Organisms living on a person are not automatically causing disease, and writing as though presence equals illness is the single most common conceptual error in first briefs. Say found in, or colonizing, unless the source establishes disease.
Use rates the way epidemiology uses them. Incidence counts new cases over a period; prevalence counts existing cases at a point. Attach a population and a time frame to either one, because a percentage with neither cannot be checked by anyone.
Match the source to the claim. Public health agencies publish surveillance figures and case definitions; peer reviewed studies publish mechanisms and susceptibility findings. Citing a news article for a transmission rate, or an agency page for a molecular mechanism, weakens a paragraph that was otherwise correct.
What separates a passing brief from a strong one
A passing brief is accurate and complete. It identifies the organism, describes the disease, mentions treatment and cites real sources. Nothing in it is wrong, and it lands in the seventies because every sentence could have been written about a different organism with two words changed. That last move is the difference between a report and an argument.
Six mistakes that quietly cost marks
- Using the disease name as the organism. Two different things, two different sentences, and a grader notices immediately when they are fused.
- Treating bacteria as singular. One is a bacterium. The plural agreement error appears in almost every first draft and it reads as unfamiliarity.
- Writing treatment without a target. Naming a drug is recall. Naming what the drug attacks is the row.
