The short answer

The second half of the professional nursing concepts bridge usually opens where the first half left off: with the literature itself. An opening stage here typically asks you to read one research article properly, front to back, and write an accurate summary of it, because summarizing without distortion is the entry skill every evidence assignment after it will assume. Your section may print this as NR 300B or NR300B; it is the same course. Chamberlain publishes no syllabi outside Canvas. Decode what an article summary stage really wants

A provider in a family practice hands the nurse a printout between patients: a study on watchful waiting for ear infections in young children, with a note that says "worth a look for our callback script." What she does next is the whole subject of this stage. Skim the abstract and nod, and the article changes nothing. Read it properly, who was studied, what was compared, what was found, how confidently, and she can say something true about it at the next huddle. An article summary assignment is that huddle sentence, expanded to a page and graded.

The core competency being scored is fidelity. A summary must say what the article says, no more, no less, and in your words. That splits into recognizable sub-skills a grader can see line by line: identifying the research question the authors actually asked rather than the topic in general; stating who the participants were and how many; describing what was done in plain language; reporting the main finding with its direction and rough size; and repeating the authors' own stated limitations rather than inventing generic ones. Each of those is a sentence or two, and each is checkable against the article, which is what makes this assignment easy to grade severely.

The register matters as much as the content. At the undergraduate bridge level nobody expects statistical sophistication; what is expected is honest plain-language reporting that does not inflate a modest finding into proof, and prose in your own syntax rather than the abstract's sentences rearranged. Both expectations trip more students than the reading does.

Summarize the study, step by step

Six moves from printout to faithful summary.

  1. Read the article twice before writing anything

    First pass for the shape: question, participants, method, finding. Second pass with a pen, marking the exact sentences where the authors state their aim, their numbers and their caveats. Summaries written after one pass reliably inherit the abstract's spin.

  2. Write the research question in your own one sentence

    Not the topic, the question: what did the authors want to know about whom? If you cannot produce this sentence, the rest of the summary has no spine, and the gap will show in your first paragraph.

  3. Capture the participants with numbers attached

    Who, how many, where from, and anything notable about who was left out. A summary that says "children were studied" when the article studied 84 children under three at two urban clinics has discarded the exact information the assignment exists to preserve.

  4. Describe what was done as if to a colleague

    Two or three plain sentences a fellow nurse would follow at the station: what the groups were, what one got that the other did not, what was measured and when. Method jargon copied from the article is the most common form of accidental plagiarism in this stage.

  5. Report the finding with direction and size, then stop

    Which way the result pointed and roughly how much, in the units the study used. Resist the upgrade to "proves" or "shows that all children": a faithful summary keeps the finding the size the authors left it.

  6. Close with the authors' limitations and your one-sentence takeaway

    Repeat the caveats the authors themselves state, then add a single sentence on what this study might mean for practice like yours, clearly labeled as your reading rather than their claim.

Report someone else's evidence without bending it

Every number you carry over must survive a check against the article. Sample size, follow-up length, the size of the effect: copy them onto a scratch sheet during your second read and verify them in your draft. Transposed numbers are the most common factual error graders find in summaries, and the easiest to prevent.

Paraphrase from a closed document. Read the passage, shut the file, write the idea, reopen to verify. A summary is the assignment format most likely to drift into the original's sentence shapes, because the original is open on the second monitor the whole time. Close it.

Keep the authors' hedges in your sentences. If the study says the intervention may reduce return visits in this population, your summary says may, in this population. Deleting hedge words is not simplification; it changes what the evidence claims, and this stage grades exactly that difference.

Attribute every claim to its owner. Sentences reporting the study cite the study; your one labeled takeaway stands apart as yours. A summary where the reader cannot tell who is speaking, you or the authors, fails the fidelity test even when every fact in it is right.

Avoid the five mistakes of this week's territory

  • Summarizing the abstract. Abstracts are advertisements with word limits. Graders look for details that only appear in the body, and their absence is diagnostic.
  • The finding, inflated. Turning "was associated with fewer callbacks" into "prevents callbacks" is the single most penalized move in evidence coursework, and it starts here.
  • Generic limitations. Writing "small sample, more research needed" when the authors named specific caveats shows the limitations section went unread.
  • Rearranged sentences as paraphrase. Originality software matches structure, and a summary is the assignment where structural borrowing happens most naturally. Write from a closed file.
  • Opinion braided through the report. Reactions belong in the one labeled takeaway sentence, not scattered through the findings as adjectives like "impressive" or "disappointing".

Questions students ask about this stage

Do I get to pick the article, and what makes a good pick?
Sections vary: some assign the article, some provide a short list, and some send you to the databases with criteria. Where the choice is yours, pick for summarizability rather than glamour. A single clearly reported study, one question, defined groups, a measurable outcome, on a topic you actually meet in practice, an ear infection protocol, asthma follow-up calls, toddler sleep guidance, will be far easier to summarize faithfully than a sprawling review article or a methods-heavy trial. Check three things before committing: it is peer-reviewed and recent enough for your rubric's window, it is research rather than an opinion piece or editorial, and you can state its question in one sentence after the first read. If that sentence will not come, the article is a poor fit for this assignment, whatever its quality.
The results section is full of statistics I do not recognize. What do I do?
Anchor yourself to the plain-language sentences the authors almost always provide at the start of the discussion section, where they restate the main finding without the machinery. Your job at this level is direction and rough size: which group did better, by about how much, in what units. You can report that faithfully without interpreting the test statistics that produced it. Where a number is essential, a difference in visits, a score change, carry it over exactly and attribute it. Where a technique is named that you cannot explain, do not fake fluency; either omit the technical detail, which a summary is allowed to do, or name it neutrally as the analysis the authors used. Graders at this stage penalize misused statistical vocabulary far more heavily than absent statistical vocabulary, and honest plain reporting is the assignment.
How is a summary different from the critique we do later?
A summary reports; a critique judges. This week you are a faithful witness: what the authors asked, did, found and admitted, in your words, with your opinion confined to one labeled sentence. Later stages in an evidence sequence add the evaluative layer, whether the design could answer the question, whether the sample supports the conclusion, whether the finding transfers to your patients. Keeping the two apart now is not busywork; it builds the discipline that makes later critique credible, because a judgment is only worth reading when the reader trusts you saw the study clearly first. Practically, watch your adjectives: the moment words like flawed, robust or impressive appear outside your takeaway sentence, you have started critiquing inside an assignment that grades fidelity, and points leave through that exact door.
