What MPH-505 Week 3 asks for

New parents leaving a maternity unit are told how an infant should be placed to sleep, they can repeat the advice accurately at the two-week visit, and a proportion of them are doing something different by the two-month visit. Nothing in that sequence is explained by a knowledge deficit. What changed between the two visits is that the family went home into a household where a grandmother who raised four children advises otherwise, where the baby settles better in a position the parents were told to avoid, and where the immediate reinforcement of a sleeping infant arrives every night while the risk being prevented is invisible and probabilistic. That gap between knowing and doing, and the social and environmental machinery inside it, is what this stage is for.

The theory gives you named handles on that machinery. Self-efficacy is confidence in performing this specific behavior under real conditions, and it is the construct most consistently associated with actually doing things; it is raised chiefly by successfully performing a small version of the behavior, secondarily by watching someone similar succeed, and only weakly by encouragement. Observational learning says that behavior is acquired by watching models whose similarity to the observer matters more than their authority. Outcome expectations are what a person believes will follow from acting, which is not the same as what the evidence says will follow. Reinforcement covers what actually happens after the behavior, including the immediate consequences that so often run against the recommended action.

Interpersonal influence is the companion material. Social support divides usefully into emotional, informational, instrumental and appraisal support, and those four call for completely different activities. Social norms divide into what people believe others do and what people believe others approve of, and the two frequently diverge. A perceived norm can be measurably wrong, which is the basis of an entire family of corrective interventions, and checking whether your audience's perception matches reality is a specific, evidenced move rather than a generic one.

Expect a written application in which these constructs have to produce activities rather than paragraphs. The strongest submissions at this stage name a model the audience would recognize as similar to themselves, describe a mastery experience small enough to succeed at, and identify what currently reinforces the behavior they are trying to displace.

Six moves for turning social learning constructs into a plan.

  1. Locate the knowing-doing gap and describe it

    Show, with evidence, that your audience already knows what to do. If knowledge is genuinely absent, this material is the wrong tool and the honest paper says so.

  2. Break the behavior into a first step small enough to succeed

    Self-efficacy grows from performance, so design an action the audience can complete on the first attempt, then a second slightly harder one. A plan with no graded sequence has no efficacy strategy.

  3. Choose models on similarity, not status

    Name who the audience would see themselves in: same life stage, same constraints, same language, same neighbourhood. A credentialed expert demonstrating an easy version of the behavior is the weakest model available.

  4. Write the outcome expectations your audience actually holds

    Including the negative ones and the socially awkward ones, sourced from formative work rather than assumed. A plan that only addresses the health outcome will lose to the expectation nobody wrote down.

  5. Audit what currently reinforces the competing behavior

    Immediate, reliable and near-term consequences beat delayed, probabilistic ones. Say what the audience gets right now from the alternative, then find something the recommended behavior can deliver quickly.

  6. Check the perceived norm against the actual one

    If most people already do the behavior and your audience believes they do not, correcting the perception with real local data is a defensible intervention. If the perception is accurate, that route is closed and you must say so.

Evidence craft for social and environmental constructs

Use a validated efficacy scale rather than inventing one. Self-efficacy is measured behavior by behavior, and published scales exist for a wide range of actions. Naming the scale you would use, with its source, converts a vague intention to measure confidence into a scoreable evaluation plan.

Say which type of support an activity provides. Emotional, informational, instrumental and appraisal support are different interventions with different staffing implications. A plan promising increased social support without saying which type is a plan nobody could implement.

Source your norm claim, or drop it. Asserting that a behavior is normative in a community without data is the fastest way to lose an evidence row here, and a corrective norms message built on an unverified norm can also backfire by telling people the undesirable behavior is common.

Report peer intervention effects with their design. Peer-delivered programmes are widely studied and results vary substantially by how peers were selected, trained and supervised. Name those details when you cite an effect, because they are the difference between a result you can expect to reproduce and one you cannot.

Five mistakes that cost points in this week's territory

  • Self-efficacy treated as encouragement. Confidence is built by successful performance of a graded task, not by being told you can do it, and the plan has to show the task.
  • Models chosen for authority. A clinician demonstrating a behavior to an audience with different constraints produces little observational learning.
  • Reinforcement ignored entirely. Plans that never ask what the audience currently gets from the competing behavior are working against an incentive they never identified.
  • Norms asserted rather than measured. An unsourced claim about what a community does is both an evidence failure and a risk of normalizing the wrong thing.
  • Environment left untouched. The theory explicitly includes the setting, so a plan that only works on the person has used a third of the model.

Questions students ask about this stage

How is self-efficacy different from the control construct in intention models?
They overlap and the literature says so, but the emphasis differs in a way that matters for design. Self-efficacy is a judgment about your own capability to perform a specific behavior under specified conditions, and it is raised primarily through graded performance. Perceived behavioral control in intention models blends that capability judgment with beliefs about external facilitation and obstruction, which means it can be raised either by building skill or by removing an obstacle. In practice, ask yourself whether your audience is unsure they could do it or certain that something outside them prevents it. The first is an efficacy problem and calls for practice and modelling; the second is a control and environment problem and calls for changing something in the setting.
Can I use a video or a story as the model instead of a live person?
Yes, and mediated modelling has a substantial evidence base, particularly in narrative formats where an audience follows a character over time. Two design points decide whether it works. The character has to be recognizably similar to the audience in the ways that matter for this behavior, which usually means life stage and constraints rather than demographics alone, and the story has to show the behavior being difficult and then succeeding, because a model who finds it easy teaches nothing about overcoming the obstacle. Where you propose narrative material, say who will produce it, who will review it with community members before release, and what specific construct each scene is meant to move, otherwise it reads as a content idea rather than a theory-driven activity.
My behavior is performed by a caregiver for someone else. Does the theory still apply?
It applies, with the constructs read carefully. The performer is the caregiver, so efficacy, expectations and reinforcement all belong to them rather than to the person who benefits. Two additions usually improve the paper. First, name every person whose agreement is needed, since caregiving decisions in many households are made jointly or deferred to a senior family member, and a plan aimed only at one parent may be aimed at someone who cannot decide alone. Second, note that the reinforcement structure is unusual here: the caregiver bears the cost and effort while the health benefit accrues to someone else, often invisibly, which makes near-term feedback to the caregiver more important than it would be for a self-directed behavior.
