MSW-507 Research Methods and Applications develops the skills to use research evidence in practice and policy decisions, covering research methods, statistics and program evaluation concepts. The graded writing is appraisal rather than production. You are not being asked to run a study; you are being asked to read one and say precisely what it does and does not license you to do with a client. The band is set by whether your conclusions stay inside what the design can support.
What MSW-507 actually grades
The first thing scored is whether you can describe a study before you evaluate it. Design, sampling, sample size, setting, measures, comparison condition, follow-up period and attrition, written plainly. Students who open a critique with the strengths and weaknesses of the study lose the description rows and then produce weak evaluation, because you cannot judge what you have not stated.
The second thing scored is inference discipline. A one group before and after study can show that scores changed. It cannot show that the program caused the change, because nothing rules out maturation, regression to the mean or the other things happening in those months. A cross sectional survey can show that two things occur together. It cannot tell you which came first. Most of the marks in this course move on whether your verbs match your design, and reduced, improved and led to are expensive verbs to borrow.
The third strand is the practice bridge. Every critique in a social work research course ends with the same question: what does this mean for what you do on Monday. Answering that requires you to say who the study's participants were and whether your clients resemble them, what the effect was in real terms rather than in significance, and what would need to be true locally for the finding to transfer. That is applicability, and it is the row most often left as a paragraph of generalities.

Read the guide before you open the article
Research prompts are usually short and the guide is usually long, which is a reliable sign that the grading is mechanical and generous to anyone who follows it. Read the rows and sort them into three families: reporting the study, appraising it, and applying it. Reporting rows reward accuracy and nothing else, appraisal rows reward naming a threat to validity and saying what it does to the conclusion, and application rows reward specificity about your own setting.
Then set the word budget. Suppose your guide works in percentages, with rows at 40, 30, 20 and 10 percent against an 1,800 word limit. That is 720 words for the 40 percent row, 540 for the 30, 360 for the 20 and 180 for the 10. If the 40 percent row is appraisal and your draft has 300 words there behind 900 words of summary, the numbers have told you what the grader would have.
One efficiency worth knowing. Write the description section from the article's methods and results, never from its abstract or discussion. Authors describe their own work generously in those places, and a critique built on the abstract inherits the author's framing, which the appraisal rows are specifically designed to catch.

Whatever your week's rubric calls it, the dominant deliverable here is an appraisal of one study, and the same parts recur.

Write the threats section from the methods rather than from the authors' limitations paragraph. Authors name the limitations they can live with, and the ones they leave out are usually the ones your appraisal rows are looking for.
Reading statistics honestly, without pretending to be a statistician
Nobody expects a social work student to re-analyse the data. They expect you to read what is reported and refuse to over-claim.
- Significance is not size. A p value below the threshold says the result is unlikely under the null hypothesis, not that it matters. Look for the effect size or the actual difference in scores, and report that in the outcome's own units.
- Confidence intervals carry the honesty. An interval that crosses no difference tells you the study cannot rule out nothing happening, however small the p value looks in the abstract.
- Attrition changes who was studied. If a fifth of participants left before follow-up and they differed from those who stayed, the remaining sample is not the sample recruited, and the finding belongs to the survivors.
- Correlation coefficients need context. Say what the relationship was between, in what direction, and how strong, rather than reporting a number and calling it a relationship.
- Qualitative work has its own standards. Judge it on sampling logic, saturation, analytic method, reflexivity about the researcher's position and the fit between quotations and claims, not on how many people took part.
- Check who paid and who benefits. Funding and author affiliation belong in your appraisal when the sponsor has an interest in the result, stated as a fact rather than an accusation.
What separates a passing critique from a strong one
A passing critique summarises the study accurately, lists strengths and weaknesses in two tidy paragraphs and concludes that more research is needed. It reads as a book report on a journal article and sits mid band because the weaknesses it names could be attached to any paper in the field.
Strong critiques do three visible things. They tie each limitation to a specific consequence, saying not just that the sample was drawn from one clinic but what that does to the claim being made. They quantify, translating a reported result into what it would mean for ten clients rather than leaving it as a coefficient. And they finish with a genuine practice decision, naming what they would do with this evidence, what they would not do, and what additional information would change their mind. That last move is the whole purpose of teaching research to practitioners.
Six mistakes that cost points here
- Causal verbs on correlational designs. The single most expensive habit in the course. If there was no comparison group and no randomisation, write was associated with and keep your conclusion inside it.
- Critiquing from the abstract. Abstracts omit the attrition, the exclusions and the measure nobody validated, which is where the appraisal points live.
- Generic limitations. Small sample size, self-report bias and lack of generalisability applied without saying how they bite here reads as a template.
- Ignoring the comparison condition. A program compared against nothing and a program compared against usual services support very different claims, and students often skip which one they read.
- Treating peer review as proof. Publication means the work passed a threshold, not that its conclusions are correct or that they apply to your clients.
- Posting an unchecked statistic to the board. Chamberlain discussion posts cannot be edited after submission, so a misread finding stays on the record for the whole session.
